Bethel Park School District has moved the first day of school for all students to Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, implementing a two-day delayed start tied to the opening of the district's new elementary school.
Superintendent Dr. Matthew Patterson said the building will be ready for instruction by the original target date, but the additional time will allow faculty and staff to review emergency procedures, verify safety equipment, and finalize arrival and dismissal routines before students arrive.
"This slight adjustment to our calendar will benefit everyone involved, especially our students," Patterson said, adding that the delay will not shorten breaks or extend the school year.
To accommodate the change without reducing instructional time, the district made the following calendar adjustments:
- Sept. 1: Inservice Day (moved from March 8, 2027)
- Sept. 2: Act 80 Day for staff development and setup
- March 8: Now a regular instructional day for students
- June 10 and 11: Graduation and the final day of school remain unchanged
Patterson said the extra days will also help high-traffic back-to-school events — including Walk Your Schedule and Kindergarten Orientation — run smoothly for families.
This fall, the new Bethel Park Elementary School will, for the first time, bring together students from the five former elementary schools and welcome students in grades K-5.
