Melina Stewart, a sophomore at Bethel Park High School, was named Student of the Month for May by the Bethel Park Rotary Club.
Stewart serves as the president of the newly formed Interact club, a service organization for young people ages 12-18 who want to join together to tackle the issues in their community that they care most about. Interact club members carry out hands-on service projects, make international connections, develop leadership skills, and have fun in the process.
Bethel Park’s Interact club began in December and has already held a care home drive, a books and blankets program for those in need and held a coin drive for a sick classmate. In addition, Interact has created a pen pals program between their members and some area seniors.
Students are nominated by administrators, teachers, students or community members and were chosen on the basis of academics, as well as scholastic, extracurricular, and civic honors and awards, and organization membership and leadership.
At a luncheon held each month, honorees receive a certificate acknowledging their contribution to their community. For more information on Rotary and its’ mission, please ask any Rotary member about it or visit bethelparkrotary.org
