15 BPHS Students Recognized By Quill & Scroll
The 2019 Quill and Scroll Inductees Bethel Park High School inducted 14 students into its chapter of Quill and Scroll, the International Honorary Society for High School Journalists.
     
The awards were presented to students who are members of the Bethel Park High School Hawk Eye online newspaper, Beacon yearbook, Black Hawk TV video production studio and Vernissage literary magazine, and who have excelled in communications work during the 2018-2019 school year.
     
Initiated this year were seniors Alyssa Dixon, Leslie Folino, Alex Magnu, Jay McCann, Alex Noel, Sarah Pellis, Tyler Schultz and Troy Sigafoos; juniors Joseph Bova, Meghan Kanzius, Parker Loera, Alexis Smith, Gabrielle Straub and sophomore Olivia Westphal.
      
To be inducted into Quill and Scroll, students must be in grades 10-12, be in the upper third of their class academically, have done superior work in some phase of school publications and be recommended by their publication adviser.
     
Inducted students received membership pins, award of honor certificates, membership cards and a subscription to Quill and Scroll magazine.
     
Freshman Anastasia Williams received the Award of Honor for her work on the newspaper and yearbook staff.  Freshmen are not eligible for induction into Quill and Scroll, but can receive special recognition for their efforts and contributions.
      
The Bethel Park High School Quill and Scroll Chapter was established in 1947.  Bethel Park High School English Department Facilitator Dr. Charles Youngs serves as the Chapter’s Coordinator and as the adviser for the Vernissage literary magazine.  Bethel Park High School English Teacher John Allemang is the Adviser for the Hawk Eye newspaper and Beacon yearbook.  Bethel Park High School Technology Education Teacher Brad Kszastowski is the Adviser for the Black Hawk TV station.
      
Delivering the Keynote Address was 1978 Bethel Park High School graduate Andy Amrhein, who spoke about his long-time radio show on KDKA-AM, his weekly segments on KDKA-TV’s Pittsburgh Today Live and his television shows on BPTV, the Bethel Park Municipality’s cable television station.
