ONLINE TICKETS ARE ON SALE FOR BETHEL PARK DAY AT KENNYWOOD (JUNE 16)
Bethel Park School District’s 2023 Kennywood Day will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023. This year’s tickets will be sold exclusively online through Kennywood. No tickets will be sold at any Bethel Park school.
Guests can purchase an Event Day Online Park Admission Ticket for $35.99 (plus fees), or if you’re unsure you can make it on June 16, you could also opt for the Flexible Date Online Park Admission Ticket for $38.99 (plus fees). That guarantees you admission on any date between April 22 and June 30.
THE BETHEL PARK MINUTE
Bethel Park School District Superintendent Dr. James Walsh regularly addresses timely or hot-button issues facing BPSD during video segments he calls “The Bethel Park Minute.” The informal videos are typically brief and a way for Dr. Walsh to answer questions he’s receiving and to address or dispel some of the misconceptions that may arise.

SENIOR CLAP-OUT EVENTS
Bethel Park High School members of the Class of ‘23 will have the opportunity to return to where it all started as part of their respective elementary school's Senior Clap Out on Tuesday, June 6. The times vary by school.
CLASS OF ‘23 COMMENCEMENT INFORMATION
The BPHS Class of '23 Commencement Ceremony will be held at Black Hawk Stadium at 7 PM on Thursday, June 8. Everyone is invited to join us for the big event. Attached are ticket and parking information and seating info for our elderly and/or handicapped guests.
BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM
The Baccalaureate Program for the Bethel Park High School Class of 2023 is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, in the Bethel Park High School Auditorium. Seniors, their families, and friends are invited to attend this community-sponsored ceremony. Seniors should arrive in cap and gown in the auditorium by 6:45 p.m. to participate in this voluntary yet time-honored tradition. BETHEL PARK NAMES WALTERS ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Mr. Keith Walters was recently hired as the new Bethel Park High School assistant principal. This past year, Mr. Walters served as a school counselor at Independence Middle School. He previously served in a similar role in the Washington (Pa.) School District.

"No Canaries in the Coal Mine," by BPHS senior Tatum Brown, has been chosen as one of the 23rd Annual Congressional Art Competition winners.
SHAW AND SHUGHART EACH EARN MAJOR ROTC SCHOLARSHIP MONEY
Last Week, Sergeant Matt Sunseri from the Army National Guard presented a pair of $168,456 scholarship checks each to Bethel Park High School seniors Forest Shaw and Cole Shughart.
The young men, who have been friends since attending Memorial Elementary School, won national scholarships based on outstanding academic performance, leadership traits, commitment to service, and extracurricular activities.
Shaw will attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall, where he plans to study data science. Shughart is bound for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he will major in cybersecurity.
US ARMY WAR COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES VISIT BPHS
BPHS alumnus COL Lance Oskey ‘89, the US Army War College Chief of Staff, recently led a panel discussion with BPHS AP History students about various geopolitical issues. He was joined by COL Dena Goble, BG Atul Bhat (Indian Army), and history professor Dr. Mike Neiberg.
The officials recently conducted a panel discussion and Q&A between the experts and BPHS AP History students. They touched on a variety of national security-related issues.
Some of the topics the panel addressed included;
+ The potential perils, opportunities, and realities associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI)
+ Complex global alliances and their historical implications
+ The fundamental tenets of making a plan and adapting it as necessary
+ Trying to understand ways in which the military can better engage with today’s students
“Our mission is not to start wars, but rather to preserve peace,” said COL Dena Goble, one of the panelists.
Dr. Mike Neiberg, a history professor at the college and a Pittsburgh native, lent his perspective to the discussion.
Atul Bhat, a Brigadier General in the Indian Army and a current student at the college provided the students with his nation’s perspective on these various issues.
The discussion was led by COL Lance Oskey, the Chief of Staff at the college and a 1989 BPHS alumnus.
BPHS HOLDS ITS ANNUAL SENIOR AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
BPHS held its annual Senior Awards Program to recognize students who have earned scholarships or received awards for achievement. Local reps from various clubs & organizations were on-hand to present the awards personally.

BPHS CELEBRATES CULTURE DAY
One of Bethel Park’s greatest strengths is its people from various backgrounds and ethnicities. Last week, the high school celebrated Cultural Day. Students and community members shared elements of their heritage with BPHS students. One lesson was called African Dance. It was led by Pitt professor Yamoussa Camara and his group from the Camara Drama and Dance Troupe. The Guinea, West Africa native spoke to the students about individual expression through dance.
EINTRACHT BETHEL PARK FINISHES FIFTH NATIONALLY
The BPHS German Club’s fantasy soccer team, “Eintracht Bethel Park,” finished the 2023 season in 5th place out of 42 teams from across North America in Group A of the Goethe Institute of San Francisco’s “Bundesliga Total!” fantasy soccer competition. BPHS Honors and AP German students met from November 2022 to May 2023 to watch German-language highlights of matches from Germany’s top-flight soccer league (the “Bundesliga”) and answer questions about the matches. They were also required to answer questions about the Bundesliga in general and predict the winners and scores from select matchdays of the league’s current season.
BEST BUDDIES TAKES MIRACLE LEAGUE FIELD TRIP
Students Liv Kitchen, Sophia Romano, and Meghan Tischler were recently among 34 BPHS students to attend the All STARS Baseball Day at Boyce Mayview Park in Upper St. Clair.
Now in its ninth year, the 10-plus school event is sponsored by the Miracle League of the South Hills and is a wonderful opportunity for Best Buddies and their exceptional partners to have one more fun day out together before the end of the school year.
PEER PE CLASSES DESIGN MINI-GOLF HOLES
Last week, BPHS Peer PE students in Periods 5 and 8 created putt-putt golf holes for each other. The creative designs allowed the students to collaborate, create and problem-solve. The kids were also forced to rely on their math skills and learn the concept of par.
CERAMICS STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN THE ‘EMPTY BOWLS’ PROJECT
Ceramics 2 and Ceramics independent study students recently participated in the annual Empty Bowls event in collaboration with The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank partnered with Just Harvest. The program's mission is to help feed those facing food insecurity in the Pittsburgh area.
The participating students included: Maddy Bendik, Jasmine Cable, Emerson Crawford, Nivea Donati, Sam Dowling, Landon Hartman, Arabella Kennedy, Sam Kern, Jackelin Mejia, Charlotte Nass, Julia Pierson, Samira Rowe, Emma Smith, AJ Tomaino, and Katie Yonish.
BETHEL PARK'S SMITH NAMED STEEL CENTER CTE OUTSTANDING SENIOR
Bethel Park High School student Ben Smith has been selected as an Outstanding Senior in the Carpentry program by the Steel Center for Career and Technology Education for the 2022-2023 school year. Abby Winterhalter (Health Assistant) was also recognized for her performance.
Smith and Winterhalter each received multiple Student of the Month nods from the school. They were recognized for their achievement and demonstrated commitment to their craft, exemplary conduct, work ethic, attendance, and coursework proficiency.
STEEL CENTER TOP OF THE SHOP HONOREES
Eight Bethel Park High School students who attend the Steel Center for Career and Technology Education have been named Top of the Shop winners for the second semester of the 2022-2023 school year.
Seniors Layten Muszynski (Collision Repair), Aiden Anderson (Diesel Technology), Abigail Winterhalter (Health Assistants) and Max Helmich (Culinary Arts) were among the honorees. Juniors Katherine Clouston (Medical Professions), George Schaefer (APublic Safety), Torey Rauch (Veterinary Assistant), and Jacob Brown (Automotive Technician) were also honored.

Congratulations to BPHS students Santino Cole (Auto Mechanic) and Leah Mafrici (Computer Science), who each won the Mon Valley School’s prestigious Golden Hammer Award.

The Bethel Park Rotary Club’s May Student of the Month is Bethel Park High School senior Lauren Heh. She was recently recognized at a small luncheon at The Garden Restaurant [4912 Gardenville Road, Pittsburgh, PA, 15236].

Congratulations to BPHS’s Julie Hernandez, recently named an Apple Award winner by the National State Teachers of the Year Program’s Pennsylvania Chapter.

Bethel Park's Julie Hernandez was named the Best Buddies Advisor of the Year at the recent Best Buddies Friendship Walk at Highmark Stadium in Station Square. Also,
BPHS alumna Harley Vincler '20 won Officer of the Year for her participation in the Carlow College chapter of Best Buddies.
Hernandez and Vincler were each instrumental in getting the Best Buddies program off the ground at Bethel Park.
Today, the still-growing program has more than 100 members and has become an integral part of the larger Bethel Park community.
COLLEGE BOARD RELEASES 2023-2024 SAT CALENDAR
High school students who want the option to submit their SAT scores to colleges and universities, including test-optional ones, can still do that. If you took the SAT as a junior, The College Board recommends that you retake it in the fall to improve your score before college applications are due. Dates and deadlines are as follows:

GRADE 7/8 LACROSSE TEAM PARTICIPATES IN LAXFEST
Bethel Park’s Grade 7-8 boys lacrosse team recently participated in LaxFest, an annual regional lacrosse tournament featuring 14 of the region’s top programs. The Hawks played North Allegheny, Mt. Lebanon and Seneca Valley, winning two of three! The playoffs begin this weekend.

Bethel Park School District proudly recognizes Independence Middle School student Nate Purcell as a recipient of the National Junior Honor Society Outstanding Achievement Award.
EIGHTH GRADE MOVE-UP DAY
Friday was Eighth Grade Move-Up Day at BPHS. Next year’s high school freshmen make the trek from Independence Middle School to the high school, where they had the opportunity to meet their future school counselors, tour the facility and meet some of their future schoolmates. They were also treated to a wonderful welcome from the Top 21.

Independence Middle School eighth grade students were recognized for various academic, musical and leadership achievements at the 2023 Eighth Grade Awards Program. Tonight, at 7 p.m. IMS will hold a school-wide academic awards program.

Independence Middle School students on Team Valor recently enjoyed a special "day of flight" as they explored the National Aviary and the new Moonshot Museum on the North Shore during their Grade 7 field trip.
NAMS STUDENTS LEARNING CODING BASICS
NAMS students are learning some coding basics in a program called Ozobots.
NAMS TEAMS RANGER AND ATLANTIS VOLUME ZOO
The Neil Armstrong Middle School fifth grade Teams Ranger and Atlantis recently completed their second annual Volume Zoo, combining science and art. In the linked video, the students explain the process and its importance. Their creations will be displayed in the NAMS lobby during school hours until the end of today.
NAMS TEAM RANGER’S TRIP TO THE LOCAL FOOD BANK
Members of Team Ranger recently took a field trip to the Greater Pittsburgh Area Food Bank. Before the trip, they read about food insecurity, and the team sponsored a school-wide food drive.
NAMS collected and donated 334 pounds (almost 340 items) and $90 to the food bank!
While on the field trip, students could tour the food bank and learn about food insecurities in our area, how it works, and how they can continue to help!
They topped off the day with a quick lunch stop at the game preserve.
NAMS TEAM ARTEMIS VISITS MOONSHOT MUSEUM
NAMS Team Artemis stayed true to its space-themed name with a recent trip to the Moonshot Museum on Pittsburgh’s North Shore. The Astrobotic Peregrine lunar lander is scheduled to go to the moon this summer, and its Mission Control will also be based in Pittsburgh.
SIXTH GRADERS MAKE JUST SAY NO T-SHIRTS
The Sixth Grade “Just Say No,” club made T-shirt designs using an anti-drug theme. The students then voted on the design that they liked best. Adrienne Hoffbauer created the winning design. Her slogan was, DRUGS ARE NACHO THING. The design was then printed and transferred onto a T-shirt.
SIXTH GRADE JAZZ BAND PERFORMS AT LINCOLN ELEMENTARY
The sixth grade jazz band, under the direction of Mrs. Rachel Skilone, went on a field trip to Lincoln Elementary to perform for the entire school. The jazz band performed such popular hits as “Just A Closer Walk with Thee” and “Jump, Jive, an’ Wail” while improvising and showing the younger students how their instruments work in a “show and tell” in-between songs.
PERCUSSION DAY AT NAMS
The NAMS music department recently held its annual Percussion Day with 22 fifth and sixth grade percussion students taught by Rachel Skilone and Jeff Knell. Participating students worked with clinician Patrick Jones, music teacher and drumline instructor at Upper St. Clair School District. They learned about the history of drumming, snare drum rudiments, and drum set techniques.
LINCOLN CELEBRATES ITS ACCELERATED READERS PROGRAM
Students at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School recently attended a Washington Wild Things game. All the students who met their Accelerated Reader goal received a FREE ticket to the game. The students were also invited down on the field to be recognized for their reading accomplishments this school year. All the kids and families at Lincoln had a great time celebrating and enjoying the game.
Earlier, students and staff at the school held an AR Celebration Walk to recognize the students’ reading efforts during the final nine-week grading period. Lincoln librarian Mrs. Milana Popovic organized the event.
WASHINGTON HOLDS A YOUNG AUTHORS' EVENT
Last week, students in Mrs. Jill Schall's second grade class at Washington Elementary presented their favorite writing projects to their families at Young Author’s Day. The students also shared a self-created autobiographical Google slide show as part of their presentation.
PIEROGI RACES AT MEMORIAL
Last week, Pittsburgh Pirates Pierogies Jalapeño Hannah and Oliver Onion visited Memorial Elementary School, where they met and later competed against the third graders in a series of fun races.
FRANKLIN CELEBRATES AMERICAN HISTORY WITH A FUN PLAY
Earlier today, second graders at Benjamin Franklin Elementary School entertained their classmates with a performance centered around a patriotic-themed “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” faux game show competition. The play examined some true American heroes, from George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln to 20th Century heroes John F. Kennedy and Rachel Carson. The production closed with “The Star Spangled Banner” and a song listing all American presidents.
STANEK NAMED FRANKLIN’S PRINCIPAL FOR THE DAY
Theo Stanek, a first grader at Benjamin Franklin Elementary School, was Principal for the Day today. He had the opportunity to shadow Mrs. Teresa Doumont, the school’s regular principal. He also declared no homework for his class and extra recess!
Theo won the opportunity to be principal through a drawing as part of a PTO fundraiser that raised more than $1000.

SAMUEL AND ANNA MAE RICHARDSON COMMUNITY GARDEN
Benjamin Franklin Elementary School students recently visited the Samuel and Anna Mae Richardson Community Garden in Coverdale, where they helped plant a variety of vegetables to be shared by the community. The planted vegetables, harvested over the next six weeks, include pumpkin, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, arugula, beets, onions, and lettuce.
LITTLE MISS MAJORETTES
Over the weekend, Elena Marshall, a William Penn Elementary School kindergartner, took top honors at the Little Miss Majorette of PA. Also, Mairead Hollis, a first grader at Ben Franklin Elementary School, was the Little Intermediate Pageant Winner of PA. The annual baton twirling competition was held at the Kovalchick Center at IUP. In July, the girls earned the right to compete in the national Little Miss Majorette of America at Notre Dame.

Last week, Miles Jackson, a standout on the boys soccer team, signed his college letter to compete collegiately at La Roche University, starting this fall.
The boys golf team is looking for players in grades 9-12 who want to try out for the upcoming season this fall. The team's first official function will be a 9-hole practice round and info session at 8 a.m., on June 9, at South Park Golf Course.

SLOW-PITCH SOFTBALL IS LOOKING FOR NEW TEAM MEMBERS
The Bethel Park Slow Pitch Association is a competitive, school-affiliated softball program for grades 7-12 students. Tryouts for JV and Varsity teams will be held Tuesday, August 1 - Friday, Aug. 4, with rain dates Monday, Aug. 7- Wednesday, Aug. 9. Junior High tryouts will be held only if there’s an influx of incoming players.
Registration for the fall season will be open from Thursday, June 1, through Sunday, July 23.
CUB SCOUT PACK ACCEPTING NEW MEMBERS
Cub Scout Pack 215 has been integral to Bethel Park for many years. It accepts new scouts between grades K-5 and encourages Scouts to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

FCC ANNOUNCES AFFORDABLE CONNECTIVITY PROGRAM
The Affordable Connectivity Program is a Federal Communications Commission program that helps connect families and households struggling to afford internet service. This new benefit provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for families on qualifying Tribal lands. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 from purchasing a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers.
Eligible households can enroll through a participating broadband provider or directly with the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) using an online or mail-in application.
