February is Black History Month, and students at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School are celebrating the occasion through a unit called Black History Month Learning Centers.
There are five centers in the school's library, focusing on the principles of Learning, Art, Kindness, Reading, and Building (puzzles). The students use the centers to learn more about significant African American figures and historical events.
Some of the figures the students studied included Trombone Shorty (self-taught musician), George Washington Carver (peanut butter inventor), Garrett Morgan (inventor of the traffic signal), and various other civil rights leaders and prominent figures.
Milana Popovic, the school's librarian, said she created the centers to help educate her students about different historical events in our nation's history and to help them formulate a sense of understanding and acceptance.
"We really wanted to tie in the theme of Kindness, Love, and Respect for all humanity, and what better time to do that than around Valentine’s Day," she said.
