First Graders Learn About The Engineering Design Process

← Back Print This Article

First Graders in Mrs. Williams' room had fun learning about the Engineering Design Process in their first STEAM Project of the 2019-2020 school year.

On the first day of school they read the Mo Willems book, The Pigeon HAS to GO to School!  It is a story about a pigeon who didn't want to go to school, but he finally gets excited about getting on the bus to go.

Mrs. Williams' students were challenged with designing a wheeled vehicle to get the pigeon to school.  Before they began their project, they watched a science video about wheels and axels, sketched out their own design ideas, met with their partners and then collaborated on a new design.

They built their vehicles out of recycled materials such as egg cartons, cereal and cake boxes, tape, legos, straws, cotton balls and styrofoam balls.  Some students built buses and some built trains, but no matter what they created, they were great vehicles to transport the pigeon to school!
