First Graders Have Fun With Feather Race

← Back Print This Article

First Graders in Mrs. Joseph's Room spent some time before Thanksgiving studying turkeys and reading the book, The Great Turkey Race.

Some of the things the students learned about turkeys included that even though they do not fly long distances, they can reach speeds up to 50 miles per hour.

When talking about flight, they also learned about speed, velocity and direction.  To put what they learned into use, they participated in a Turkey Feather Relay Race.  Mrs. Joseph set up a course in her classroom, and students had to work in teams to move a colored feather down a runway, using the air from a turkey baster, and into a bucket set up on its side.

Once the students got the hang of squeezing air out of the turkey baster, they had a great time moving the feather!
