The Bethel Park High School German Club’s fantasy soccer team, “Eintracht Bethel Park,” finished the 2021 season as runners-up in Group A of the Goethe Institute’s “Bundesliga Total!” fantasy soccer league. The BPHS team ended the season just one point shy of the champions, “FC Stürmer” of Cary Academy in North Carolina. BPHS’ club competed from February through May against 21 other clubs from high schools across the US, Canada and Mexico. They met virtually during each of six rounds to answer questions in German about German-language highlight videos of soccer matches from Germany’s professional soccer league (the “Bundesliga”) as well as questions about the league itself. They also had to predict the winners and scores of all of the league’s matches in each round’s Bundesliga matchday.
Eintracht Bethel Park is an inaugural member of “Bundesliga Total!,” which was founded by the Goethe Institute of San Francisco in 2016. The BP team has finished in the top 10 every year, and has been the league’s runner-up twice. This year was the closest the BP club ever came to the title. It was also the fourth time the BPHS team finished as the top team in the Pittsburgh area. This season, Eintracht Bethel Park finished well ahead of teams from Springdale, North Allegheny, Mars, Moon and Mt. Lebanon High Schools.
The 2021 Eintracht Bethel Park roster consisted of juniors Willow Hernishin (captain) and Michael Bostaph, both of whom were Honors German IV students, as well as freshmen Sam Basile, Lucas Hertzel and Hersh Kambli, who were in Honors German II.
