Last week, 90 Bethel Park High School students from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes were inducted into the National Honor Society. Each inductee was judged to have demonstrated the four pillars of NHS: Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. Congratulations to the honorees and their families.
MUSIC DEPARTMENT’S SHOWCASE OF EXCELLENCE: APRIL 17
Do not miss the Bethel Park Music Department’s Showcase of Excellence at 6:30 p.m., on Monday, April 17, in the Bethel Park High School gymnasium. The family-friendly event will feature the Bethel Park High School Bethettes, Majorettes, and the Black Hawk Drumline. The incredible Top 21 chorus will also be featured as they perform the National Anthem and the Alma Mater.
CERAMICS STUDENTS’ WORK TO BE DISPLAYED

PSSA TESTING SCHEDULE
Here are Bethel Park's testing dates in which students in grades 3-8 will be tested in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. Students in grades 4 and 8 will also be tested in Science.
ONLINE TICKETS WILL SOON GO ON SALE FOR BETHEL PARK DAY AT KENNYWOOD (JUNE 16)
Bethel Park School District’s 2023 Kennywood Day will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023. This year’s tickets will be sold exclusively online through Kennywood. No tickets will be sold at any Bethel Park school.
Guests can purchase an Event Day Online Park Admission Ticket for $35.99 (plus fees), or if you’re unsure you can make it on June 16, you could also opt for the Flexible Date Online Park Admission Ticket for $38.99 (plus fees). That guarantees you admission on any date between April 22 and June 30.
THE DEADLINE TO ORDER CAPS AND GOWNS IS APRIL 6
This is a friendly reminder to all members of the BPHS Class of ’23 that the deadline for online orders for caps and gowns is Thursday, April 6. Orders must be placed at www.jostens.com.
Orders placed after the April 6 deadline must be placed by phone at 412-276-5365. Those orders will be filled from Jostens' existing office stock; not all sizes are guaranteed.
This year’s outdoor commencement ceremony will be held at Black Hawk Stadium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 8.
HERTZEL EXCELS AT REGIONAL ENGINEERING COMPETITION
Pittsburgh's Regional Science and Engineering Fair (PRSEF) was last week. Lucas Hertzel participated and won a Sponsor's Award for his research on The Effects of Food Additives on Probiotic Bacteria.
BPHS ENGLISH 10 STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST
Last week, 135 Bethel Park High School students in English 10 and English 10 Honors visited the Century Square Luxury Cinemas in West Mifflin, where they watched six holocaust-related short films.
The films were provided to the students free of charge by Film Pittsburgh as part of its Teen Screen initiative, which focuses on using film to teach young people to respect and cherish humanity.
WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY KICKS OFF ITS KIDS OF STEEL PROGRAM
Last week, George Washington Elementary School welcomed Hunter Confair of the Kids of Steel program. The two-month program is the run-up to the Chick-Fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon on May 6.
TEAM RANGER STUDENTS AT NAMS CREATE STRUCTURES BASED ON A STORY THEY ARE READING
To connect with their reading “Sign of the Beaver” in ELA, Team Ranger students at NAMS constructed buildings that would be seen in the story in 1796. Students chose either a traditional home, saltbox house, meetinghouse, or school in Quincy, Massachusetts, or a log cabin in Maine.
The students worked from the base of a shoebox, and following measurement directions, they researched and constructed some fantastic buildings that the characters in their book would have seen.
BETHEL PARK TO HOLD SECOND ANNUAL FAMILY SENSORY MOVIE NIGHT: APRIL 15
Bethel Park School District and the Interact Club will host the second annual Sensory Family Friendly Movie Night, at 6:30 p.m., on Saturday, April 15, at IMS. The event is open to all families in the area that have disabled members of their family. Please join us for the "Finding Nemo" movie and other sensory activities for the students. COMPETITIVE CHEER TRYOUTS
Tryouts for BP Gameday Cheer for the 2023-2024 school year will be held in the BPHS south and main gymnasiums on Saturday, May 6.
Middle schoolers should arrive by 1:30 p.m. High schoolers should arrive by 3:30 p.m.
There is also a mandatory parent meeting in the BPHS cafeteria at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 25.

NAMS PTO LAUNCHES NEW PAINT-A-ROCK FUNDRAISER
If you’ve been to Neil Armstrong Middle School recently, you may have noticed painted boulders outside the school parking lot. They are part of the NAMS PTO’s Rent the Rock fundraiser, in which parents, administrators, and teachers can rent up to four large rocks for $25 each for the week and decorate for any occasion.

WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL’S GREEN TEAM HOSTS METAL RECYCLING EVENT
Last weekend, Washington Elementary’s Green Team partnered with the Municipality of Bethel Park, Vericheck Technical Services, Michael Brothers Hauling and Recycling, and Scrap University for the first-ever George Washington Elementary Metal Recycling Event.
The kids recently shot a commercial about the event with the help of our friends from BPTV. Here is a video of the event. KDKA produced an excellent piece on the event. BPTV also featured the WE Green Team in its Around Town series.

WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY HOLDS MARCH BOOK MADNESS TOURNAMENT
The NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will come to a close tonight, with either Connecticut or San Diego State cutting down the nets on the men’s side. Yesterday, LSU defeated Iowa, led by the phenomenal Caitlin Clark, to claim the women’s title.
The first graders at Washington Elementary are celebrating a different type of March Madness, “March Book Madness,” in which the students compare books in a bracket-style playoff.
The students and their teachers read the books, and then the students vote on their favorite selections. The titles with the most votes advance to the next round.
That tournament has reached its Final Four, with its champion to be crowned next week. The books that remain in contention for the Washington Elementary March Book Madness championship include:
1.) “We Don’t Eat Our Classmates,” by Ryan T. Higgins;
2.) “If You Plant a Seed,” by Kadir Nelson;
3.) “Enemy Pie,” by Derek Munson;

THE BETHEL PARK MINUTE
Bethel Park School District Superintendent Dr. James Walsh regularly addresses timely or hot-button issues facing BPSD during video segments he calls “The Bethel Park Minute.” The informal videos are typically brief and a way for Dr. Walsh to answer questions he’s receiving and to address or dispel some of the misconceptions that may arise.
The most recent edition discussed Bethel Park’s 2023 Alumni Hall of Fame class.
MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS MONTH
March is Music in Our Schools Month, and to celebrate, elementary music teachers worked together to put on Bethel Park's 15th Annual Fourth Grade Chorus Concert. The event involved every single one of Bethel Park's fourth graders, as the students had learned five songs in music classes over the last three months. They all came together on the evening of Thursday, March 30, to present a concert for friends and family in the Bethel Park High School Auditorium. Also involved in the event were the Independence Singers from IMS and the Top 21 high school choir.
In a separate event, the Lincoln Elementary School second grade class sang and played music class instruments to accompany a telling of the children's story, "Swimmy." The audience for each presentation was one of Lincoln's kindergarten classes, giving those students a taste of what they will learn in music classes over the next few years.
AUTISM ACCEPTANCE MONTH
April is known for its spring flowers, a small golf tournament in Georgia, several significant holidays, and Autism Acceptance Month. This April, autism rights groups have asked schools and the media to focus on including and accepting those with different neurologies. This starts with the small but significant change from Autism Awareness to Autism Acceptance. Bethel Park School District is proud to honor that request, and several of its teachers are leading lessons and activities that have already made that shift.
Independence Middle School's art teacher Mrs. Whitaker, paraprofessional Mrs. Thompson, and seventh grader Sophie Hart, collaborated to create a unique garden in the school's Autistic Support Classroom for Autism Acceptance Month.
SCHOLARSHIP REMINDERS
Many local, regional, and national scholarships are available to Bethel Park students, but the application deadlines are fast approaching. All local scholarship information can be found by visiting Mrs. Quinn in the Counseling Office or on Naviance.
Students can look up scholarship information by visiting the Naviance landing page and clicking on COLLEGES at the top of the screen. From there, they should navigate to SCHOLARSHIP SEARCH on the right-hand side, where they will find a complete listing of scholarships available, along with scholarship amounts and deadlines.

The Abraham Lincoln PTO Award for Higher Education
This $500 award is being offered to two graduating senior students that MUST have attended Abraham Lincoln Elementary School for at least two years. The criteria that will be examined for this award include a required essay, academics and community involvement. The essays will be anonymous. The winner is chosen by a volunteer panel of Abraham Lincoln teachers and administrative staff. Applications are anonymous and must be picked up in the Counseling Office with Mrs. Quinn.

Epilepsy Association of Western & Central PA Scholarship Program $1,500
Scholarships are offered for graduating high school seniors with epilepsy/seizure disorder. Awards are based on the quality of the student's application determined through a competitive scoring system that balances need with achievement. Must provide proof of acceptance to a post-secondary academic or vocational program. If selected, attend at least one of the EAWCP's Run/Walks in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Altoona, or Erie. Applications are in the Counseling Office.

Stanley K. Powers Educational Trust Scholarship
The Stanley K. Powers Educational Trust Scholarship assists students from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, who plan to continue their education in college or vocational school programs.
Applicants to the Stanley K. Powers Educational Trust Scholarship must:
Be high school seniors or graduates, current undergraduates, or graduate-level students
Have a permanent address in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
Be enrolled or plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the upcoming academic year.
Employees or children of PNC Bank Employees are not eligible to apply.
As part of your application, you must upload the following:
A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display the student name, school name, grades, and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

Bethel Park Lions George Meyer Scholarship $2,500
This scholarship is awarded annually to honor the late George Meyer, a highly respected Lions Club member, Bethel Park teacher, Student Government sponsor, and community leader who inspired many students. A scholarship grant of $2,500 will be awarded for the successful applicant's first year of college/university or post-high school training in a degree program. Eligibility is restricted to students in the 2023 graduating class of BPHS who have resided in BPSD for at least two years. This scholarship is based on anonymity and must be picked up in the Counseling Office from Mrs. Quinn.

Cartwright Orthodontics Scholarship
Dr. Gary Cartwright awards four $500 scholarships each year to help high school seniors succeed based on a written essay. The essay will be titled "What you would like to do after high school and why."
Two boys and two girls will be chosen in May to receive this scholarship which may be used toward any higher education cost. The student MUST be a past or present patient of Dr. Cartwright. Info sheet available on Naviance.
Essays should be mailed or delivered to either office in a sealed envelope with your name only (do not put your name on the essay) and labeled "Scholarship 2023". Include your address and phone number on a separate sheet of paper.

Bethel Park Woman's Club Scholarship $3,000
The scholarship will be awarded to a member of the senior class who is a resident of Bethel Park. Acceptance by an accredited school, financial need, and academic ability are the criteria the Scholarship Committee will decide on. All applications must be completed in full to be considered. Incomplete applications will be discarded. This scholarship is anonymous, and the applications are coded for identification. Male and female students are eligible to apply. Please see Mrs. Quinn in the Main office to receive an application.

Freddie Fu Sports Medicine Scholarship
Freddie H. Fu, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at UPMC Sports Medicine, created this scholarship program to increase student interest in sports medicine careers.
**The student MUST be a junior who will enter high school as a senior in the fall of 2023. **
We award one scholarship of two thousand dollars ($2,000). In return the recipient interns for six weeks (30-40 hours per week on an agreed-upon starting date) during the summer at the UPMC Freddie Fu Sports Medicine Center and the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. The selected intern will be able to observe patient evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation by physical therapists and athletic trainers, observe clients in the Sports Performance Department, and observe surgery with UPMC orthopedic surgeons. The recipient will also have responsibilities comparable to those of a Physical Therapy Aide. To apply for the Freddie Fu Sports Medicine Scholarship program, you must:

Ken Waldie Memorial Fund
This $14,000 scholarship was established in honor of Ken Waldie, a Bethel Park graduate who was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11 out of Boston on September 11, 2001. It is intended for a graduating senior who participated in varsity sports planning to further his/her education. The application is available in the Main Office, on Naviance, or at www.forukenny.com.

Landmarks Scholarship Award
This applicant must be a high school senior living in and attending school in Allegheny County. Tell us about a place in Allegheny County that is important to you. Briefly explain the significance of that place's history, architecture, and/or landscape design. Then, focus on how that place has affected you personally. The recipient will receive $1500 for his/her first year of undergraduate study to help pay tuition. The scholarship award will be renewed yearly with a maximum grant of $6000. Applications can be downloaded from the website - click on Education, then SCHOLARSHIPS or hard copies are available in the Counseling Office and attached to Naviance.
The applicant must complete the application, submit an essay on the theme stated previously, provide an official high school transcript, a copy of his/her college/university acceptance letter, and two letters of recommendation (including one from a community service representative). These materials must be emailed or postmarked by Tuesday, April 18, 2023.

Student-View Scholarship Program $5,000
Student Insights was founded on the simple principle of providing affordable, effective market research for higher education. Student Insights, located near Pittsburgh, launched its Student-View Report regionally in 2003. The 2023 Student-View Scholarship Program offers $12,000 worth of scholarships to high school seniors who plan to attend a four-year college, community/junior college, or career school. The program includes one (1) $5,000 scholarship, two (2) $1,000 scholarships, and ten (10) $500 scholarships. Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation Community Service Scholarship
The PMHF Community Service Scholarship was created in memory of Jamie Ellenberger. Jamie was a young man who Passavant Memorial Homes (PMH) was privileged to serve. He thrived in his community despite adversity. Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jamie successfully transitioned from living in a state facility to becoming an active member of his new residential

This award aims to promote, improve, and encourage the profession and practice of land surveying in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by providing financial assistance to those intending to pursue an education in surveying with the ultimate goal of becoming a practicing Professional Land Surveyor. Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation Scholarships
This scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to attend a post-high school educational institution, including a 2 or 4-year college, university, vocational, technical, or trade school in the US. Student must currently reside or have established plans to reside in one of the following counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Westmoreland, or Washington County, must have at least one parent or grandparent of Hispanic ancestry, a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0, enroll as a full-time student, and be involved in the community.

Bethel Park residents can find the school board’s current meeting calendar on our website. All school board meetings begin at 7 p.m. and are held in the Dr. Thomas A. Knight Memorial Community Room in the Bethel Park Administration Building unless otherwise noted. There are no school board meetings scheduled for July. If you cannot attend the school board meetings in person, know they will be live-streamed through the school district’s YouTube channel. BLOOD DRIVE SCHEDULED FOR BETHEL PARK’S KIM DEBALD: APRIL 7
Friends and Family of Kim DeBald are hosting a replenishment blood drive for her benefit from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., on Friday, April 7, 2023, at the Pittsburgh Pride All-Stars multipurpose room [105 Springfield Drive, Canonsburg, PA 15317].
Kim has spent 29 years teaching in the Bethel Park school district, where she is a favorite among students and colleagues.
Recently, the veteran educator was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). She needed multiple blood and platelet transfusions during treatment and will need more.
“It surprised me how much blood I needed, which made me realize how many other patients depend on blood transfusions to keep healing their bodies and souls,” Kim said.
Nicole Loebig, a sixth grade math teacher at Neil Armstrong Middle School and a close friend of DeBald’s, is helping to organize the event. According to Loebig, the decision to hold this event is just another way for Kim's friends and family to support Kim in her journey to recovery. “Knowing how impactful blood donation is to patients like Kim led us to set up a drive in her honor,” said Loebig. “We hope that not only will people continue to rally around Kim, but also learn the importance of the selfless act of donating blood.”

Congratulations to Bethel Park's Devin Collier, who took the WPIAL Class 3A Section 4 boys tennis title last week by defeating Upper St. Clair's Ronon Gibbons, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Over the weekend, at the Mt. Lebanon Invitational, Bethel Park junior Artemis Conaboy broke a 49 year-old school record with a blistering time of 58.15 seconds in the 400 meters.
The quest for a third straight PIAA title has begun earnestly for the Bethel Park High School baseball team.

Last week, in a ceremony held at the school, Bethel Park High School welcomed the newest members of its Alumni Hall of Fame. The honorees included Sgt. Charles Bonczek ’63 (posthumous), Dr. Robert S. IRS PROGRAM
The Internal Revenue Service provided details clarifying the federal tax status involving special payments made by 21 states in 2022, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
DR. FREDDIE FU SPORTS MEDICINE SCHOLARSHIP
UPMC Sports Medicine is proud to once again offer the Dr. Freddie Fu Sports Medicine Scholarship Program in 2023. UPMC developed the scholarship program to increase student interest in a career in sports medicine.
One scholarship for the amount of $2,000 will be awarded to a western Pennsylvania resident entering their senior year of high school in September 2023 in return for a six-week summer internship (30-40 hours per week for six weeks in a row) at the UPMC Freddie Fu Sports Medicine Complex and the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.
The recipient will be able to observe patient evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation by physical therapists and athletic trainers, observe clients in the Sports Performance Department, and observe surgery with UPMC orthopedic surgeons.
FCC ANNOUNCES AFFORDABLE CONNECTIVITY PROGRAM
The Affordable Connectivity Program is a Federal Communications Commission program that helps connect families and households struggling to afford internet service. This new benefit provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for families on qualifying Tribal lands. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 from purchasing a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers.
Eligible households can enroll through a participating broadband provider or directly with the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) using an online or mail-in application.
