The summer-like weather this fall extended the growing season for the Lincoln Community Garden into late October, but on October 26, the Garden was finally "put to bed" for the 2017 growing season!
This past spring and summer was the first year for the Garden, which was created by First Grade Teacher Dawn Douds and Librarian Denice Pazuchanics as a hands-on, public service learning experience for the students. Lincoln students spent the better part of the 2016-2017 school year meeting people who have created similar gardens to help the students to plan what they wanted their garden to look like.
In the spring, the Garden was planted and by the end of the growing season over 300 pounds of food was harvested and given to the South Hills Interfaith Movement's (SHIM) Food Pantry for distribution to local families.
With the warm, dry September/early October weather, the plants were still yielding beautiful vegetables such as green peppers, eggplant, zucchini, hot peppers and tomatoes. Zucchini was the veggie that did the best in the garden this year.
The Lincoln Garden Club will continue this school year with four meetings scheduled throughout the year to harvest, plan for 2018, and plant. Approximately 30 students participate in the Garden Club. Club activities include fun things such as learning how to weigh, measure and estimate using pumpkins, reading with a buddy, enjoying a snack and planting mums in hollowed-out pumpkin shells.
Thanks to everyone who participated--especially Miss Becky from SHIM, Andy Amrhein and Evey Hardware, and all of the folks from the WQED Education Team. A big thanks goes to Mrs. Hewes and the Lincoln PTO, as well as all of the families who donated their time to help weed and water all spring and summer! Plans are already underway to make improvements to the 2018 garden!
