Beginning in 2016-17, BPHS will teach a semester-long, project-based class centered around big datasets, analytics and data visualizations. The course is made possible with the support of the Bethel Park School District and a generous grant from The Sprout Fund and Remake Learning. Thank you!
For the past three school years, BPHS has competed in the Pittsburgh DataWorks DataJam Challenge
competition. In 2014, four BPHS teams entered the inaugural competition, with Team "Data <3" finishing as Runner-Up. In 2015, three BPHS teams entered the competition with all teams finishing First, Second and Third. A clean sweep! In 2016, BPHS students brought home First and Second Place!
In addition to the competition, participants had the opportunity to visit Pittsburgh's Bakery Square area to see how local companies use data analytics. Students visited the Pittsburgh offices of IBM
to hear firsthand how Watson
is used for predictive analytics by analyzing massive amounts of data. Next up was Management Science Associates
where students learned how data analytics helps their national corporate clients manage inventory and staffing needs effectively. Finally, students toured UPMC Technology Development Center
to learn how massive amounts of medical data can be effectively and efficiently used for patient care.
