First Graders Love Pete The Cat
Washington First Graders with Pete the Cat books and math problemsWashington First Graders love the children’s book character, Pete the Cat, and the First Grade Teaching Team—Miss Thomas, Mrs. Ellison and Mrs. Walsh—worked together to integrate the students’ love of Pete into their math unit on subtraction.
First, the students read the story, “Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons,” which is a story about how Pete loses the buttons on his shirt, but he doesn’t get upset as he keeps on singing his song.
The book is a fun way for the students to count backwards and subtract—and by the end of the story, the students were singing along with Pete!
The students learned how to write subtraction number sentences and they make construction paper Pete the Cats to display their math work in the hallway.
