Students Observe Open Heart Surgery

Bethel Park High School Anatomy and Physiology students had the opportunity to observe Open Heart surgery at Allegheny General Hospital, thanks to a program sponsored by the Gerald McGinnis Cardiovascular Center.

This is the ninth year that BPHS students have been able to observe this procedure, as have students from other area high schools, but only Bethel Park students have the opportunity to visit the Preclinical Surgery Lab as well.

The Preclinical Surgery Lab maintains cadavers for training surgical residents and the BPHS students were able to observe to see the detailed anatomy of the human body.  Additionally, students were able to listen in on interactive presentations from doctors and lab personnel about current research projects they are working on, which involve orthopedic prostheses, gene therapy, biomedical engineering of cardiovascular valves and pacemakers, technology for brain mapping and tumor removal, and safety equipment tests for chemical exposures, and emerging infectious diseases.

The students had the opportunity to insert pins into spinal bone models as part of a demonstration by representatives from Medtronics Corporation.

The students are taught by Bethel Park High School Science Teacher Barbara Eisel. Bethel Park High School Lab Technician Leslie Defranc was able to coordinate the students' visit to the Preclinical Surgery Lab through her connections as a former employee at the Lab before coming to Bethel Park.

The students who participated in this activity were Jill Acker, Alexa Bucci, Morgan Green, Amanda Len, Luke Mattola, Emma Papalia, Maria Schiller, Alycia Simpson, Erin Sullivan, Christina Zeher, Michaela Bastolla, Marissa Bruckner, Karianne Coffield, Kayla Dell, Julia Wright, Natalie DiGiorno, Dylan Dudjak, Grace Evans, Courtney Geddes, Nicole Habjan, Cheyenne Hamel, Hannah Hathaway, Jamisha Jacobs, Veronica Johns, Jill Loeffelbein, Blake Melchert, Taylor Morosetti, Jessica Scarlett, Eugene Simeone, Ben Smith and Alex Summaria.
