Three Bethel Park High School and one Independence Middle School student won awards at the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair, held at Heinz Field.
Bethel Park High School senior Will Ament earned a full year tuition scholarship to Harrisburg University of Science and Technology for his project, “Effects of Drilling on Cross Creek.”
Bethel Park High School senior Marla Vaughn received two $50 Sponsor Awards and a 2011 Category Award in Chemistry for her project, “Alternative Source for Medical Oxygen.
Bethel Park High School freshman Jarrod Cingel earned two Honorable Mention Sponsor Awards for his project, “Artificial Intelligence and Skatterball.”
Independence Middle School eighth grader Kristen Kohler earned a Sponsor Award from the Pittsburgh Society of Coatings Technology for her project, “Which Paint Color Weathers the Least?”
More than 1,000 students from over 100 schools across Western Pennsylvania and Maryland competed for $1 million in cash prizes and scholarships. PRSEF has been a Pittsburgh tradition since 1940 and is the third oldest science fair in the United States under the affiliation of the Society for Science and the Public.
The high school students were prepared for this event by Bethel Park High School Science Teachers Jackie Jeffers and Barbara Eisel, and Kristen was prepared by Independence Middle School Science Teacher Michel Conklin.
