Third Graders Stage Play about Jamestown Colony

Third Grade students in Ms. Leman's classroom did a fantastic job staging, "Welcome to Jamestown," a play about America's first successful English speaking colony.  The play talked about the struggles of the English Settlers and the Powhattan Indians as they learned to live together in peace.  They performed the play for all of the Memorial Second Grade classes.

The students who are playing the parts of the English Settlers get into character before the play begins.

As do the students who are playing the parts of the Powhattan Indians.

The scenes were advanced through expert narration.

The English Settlers arrive on the shores of Virginia and name their new colony Jamestown, after King James of England.

The Indians wonder what the English Settlers are doing here.

Strife breaks out between the two groups.

The Indians take the English leader, Captain John Smith back to their village to meet with their chief.

Captain John Smith meets with Chief Powhattan.

Eventually relations improve between the two groups and Chief Powhattan's daughter, Pocahontas, marries John Rolfe.

The students prepare to take a well-deserved bow at the conclusion of the performance.  Well done!
