Third Graders Make Friends Poster
A
group of third graders in Mrs. Bentel's
Room--Emily Cowser, Natalie Ewing,
Anthony Lucchitti, Autumn Plutt and
Holly Troesch--worked together to
create a special poster to promote
friendship in their school. The
poster features a special poem and is
framed by a series of paper faces that
were given to each Memorial classroom
for all of the students to sign as a
pledge to be friends with everybody.

Third Graders Enjoy the Benefits of a
Class Bank

Mrs. Bentel's third grade
students are learning about money thanks
to a year-long Class Bank project.
Students can increase their savings
account by earning "money" for things
such as completing homework, exhibiting
good behavior and helping their teacher.
They can make "withdrawals" for "perks"
such as teaching a lesson, sitting at
the teacher's desk, sitting with a
friend or playing a spelling game.
As the year progresses, students will
learn more about saving and spending
money by participating in other
activities such as check writing.
Here, a student withdraws some of the
money in her account to present a math
lesson she prepared on her own.

Second Graders Read "The Nutcracker"
Second grade students in Miss Buckley's
room were swept up
in the magic of the story of "The
Nutcracker." They enjoyed reading
the tale of the sugar plum fairies,
giant mice and of course, the
nutcracker.

Fourth Graders "Pay It Forward"
For
the second consecutive year, Memorial
fourth graders participated in a "Pay It
Forward" holiday service project to make
the holidays brighter for 10 children
who are part of the Allegheny County
Foster Care System. The students
were encouraged to purchase a Christmas
present for one of the children and then
35 students stayed after school for a
wrapping party, working together to wrap
115 presents!

Miss A Visits Kindergarten

Miss A's visit to Memorial Kindergarten
was especially appropriate this year,
since she arrived during the beginning
of cold and flu season! This Land
of the Letter People character sings a
song about sneezing to the students, and
the children sing, "Achoo!' as part of
the song's chorus. So it was a
great teaching moment for the
Kindergarten Teachers, to stress the
importance of sneezing into a Kleenex or
into their sleeves to help prevent the
spread of germs. Achoo!

Three Cheers for the
Red, White
and Blue!
One of the themes for this year's Spirit
Week at Memorial was
Patriotic Day, and the students did
their best to come to school dressed to
show their pride for the good, old USA! |

Students Benefit from Use of Smart
Boards
Thanks
to a generous donation from the Memorial
PTA, the Memorial Library is making
books more vivid and exciting to
students with the use of one of two
Smart Boards. For example, Librarian
Mrs. Oczkowski can project Book Flix
on the Smart Board to help teach
students the difference between fiction
and non-fiction. Thank you,
Memorial PTA, for donating two Smart
Boards and for helping books to come
alive for Memorial Students!

First Graders Study Illustrator Eric
Carle

First Graders learned about children's
book illustrator Eric Carle and
his book, The Very Hungry
Caterpillar, to help them better
understand how to draw a caterpillar.
Art Teacher Amy Smeal-Mittner
showed the children how to put
geometrically shaped blocks together to
form a model from which they could draw
their own caterpillar.
