The setter plays a very important role in the game of volleyball.  First, the ball gets passed from another player.  It is then up to the setter to find the ball and set it using an overhead pass.  The setter usually puts the ball outside, in the middle, or behind then for an attacker to hit.  They are responsible for getting the ball and making sure it gets set to the best, most reasonable place, which involves making good judgment.

Once the ball gets set, its next stop may be to an outside hitter. Outside hitters are on the left hand side of the court when they want to hit, they can call, “Outside!” They are responsible for seeing the opponent’s

seeing the opponent’s court, and attacking the ball to the open court.  The outside hitters are expected to have good ball control.  They usually are fierce competitors and are always hungry to smack the ball.

Middles are much like outside hitters, except they hit from the middle front of the court.  There are two types of balls that middles like to hit.  The first option is a “1” which is low and close to the net for the middle to get a quick hit.  There is also the “2” which is high and a little bit off the net.

The libero or defensive specialist is a huge part of the volleyball team.  The libero only goes on court for defense in the back row.  They are usually there to dig balls that are hit by the opposing team.  Liberos have an exceptional bump or forearm pass.

Left back players are positioned right behind the left front or outside attackers.  Whenever a ball is attacked from the opposing team, the ball is usually aimed toward the left back

position.  Left back players are responsible for digging the ball.  They can also attack the ball from the back row as long as they don’t reach higher than the net.

Right back is where the server goes on offense or where the setter comes out of on certain rotations.  When right front blocks the ball, right back has to be ready for the tip.  If they attack, right back players have to dig any thing on the right side of the court.
