in 1924 Notre Dame won its first National Championship led by the famous four horsemen. Notre Dame went on to beat Stanford in the Rose Bowl by a score of 27 to 10. With a perfect 10 and 0 record they were national champions. There all Americans were Jim Crowley, Elman Leyden, and Harry Stuhldreher.

 

 

  Knute Rockne led the Irish to their second national championship in 1929. The 1929 Notre Dame team is known as the traveling champions. With Notre Dame Stadium not yet built they were forced to play every game on the road. Their toughest test of the season came against USC at Soldier Field. The Irish won a close one 13 to 12.They won their next two games to win a national championship. Their All Americans were Frank Cariged, and Jack Cannan.
 

 

The 1930 Notre Dame team won their second straight title. Notre Dame was dominating in their new stadium. They had a 10 and 0 record. It was Knute Rockne’s final championship before he died the following year.

 

 

 

At the start of the 1943 season Coach Frank Leahy was the head coach. They had lost 23 of their previous players due to world war two. One of the returning players though was eventual Heisman winner Angelo Bertelli. Bertelli had a great season but he was called into the service. Johnny Lujack become the starting quarterback and led them to a national championship.

World war two was over and the Irish roster was filled with ex – service men for the 1946 Notre Dame won all of their games except 1 which was a zero, zero tie to Army. Their final record was 8- 0-1. They won their second national championship in the 1940’s.

 

 

 

During the 1947 season Notre Dames opponents were lucky to even get a point. Notre Dame posted shutouts against Nebraska, Iowa, and Navy. Their final game of the season was against USC.  The Irish Dominated the game from the start winning 38- 7 and they clinched the national championship.

 

 

 During the 1949 season Coach Frank Leahy won his fourth and final national championship. Notre Dame was undefeated through their first nine games and faced Southern Methodist in their last one. It was a hard fought game, but the Irish prevailed 27-20 to win the National Championship.

 

 

 

The 1966 season was Notre Dames first National Championship in 17 years. Their final record was 9- 0-1. The tie came against number two Michigan State. Despite the disappointing tie  they still won the National Championship. It was Era’s first championship.

 

 

The 1973 season was Coach Era Parseghians second championship. They were 10 – 0 going into the sugar bowl vs. heavily favored Alabama. Notre Dame pulled off the upset with a forth Quarter score to win 24 -23. It was Era’s last championship.

 

 

 

The 1977 season was a famous season for Notre Dame. Not only did they win a national championship, but they started to wear their green jerseys. They were playing top ranked USC  so they were green jerseys for good luck. They won the game and wore the jerseys for the rest of Coach Dan Divine’s tenure there. Lead by Joe Montana, Jerome Heavens, and Vagas Ferguson They beat number on Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

 

 

 

The 1988 season was Notre Dames 11 National Championship. It was Coach Lou Holtz’s only championship. The turning point of the season came against top ranked Miami. Notre Dame pulled off the upset in one of the greatest games ever played. Led by quarterback Tony Rice they beat West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl.
