For first position, your heels must always touch. Turn each leg out from the hip, moving your toes out to the side to form a v-shape. Hold your arms out in front of you in an oval-like shape. Your hands should continue the line of your arms. Curve your fingers, especially your third, and relax your thumbs. |
For second position, keep your toes in the same line as first position, but place your heels apart. The amount of space between your heels should be about one foot. Open your arms wide, keeping them a little in front of your shoulders and slightly rounded. Be sure to keep your fingers delicate and soft. |

Cross one foot halfway in front of the other for third position. Be sure to keep your legs turned out, and straight, and keep your body lifted. Hold one arm curved and the other arm out to the side. |
For fourth position, place one foot about the length of one of your own feet in front of the other, with a space between them. Take one arm up and hold it in a graceful curve a little in front of your head. Your other arm should also be rounded, but it should be out to the side. |

In fifth position, stand with your feet crossed and touching firmly. Take both arms up and hold them in an oval-like shape, framing your face. Your fingers should be a little in front of your head. |
