Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. It takes place before and during the events of The Wizard of Oz. It starts when Elphaba is born in Munchkin Land. She then attends college at Shiz University with her sister, Nessarose who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the East, and Galinda, who later changes her name to Glinda. The story ends with Dorothy melting Elphaba. This story also shows the origins of the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man, and the Scarecrow. It’s based of the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire. |

The Phantom of the Opera is based on the novel of the same name by Gaston Leroux. It was turned into a musical by Andrew Lloyd Weber in 1986. It tells the story of a disfigured and insane genius named Erik who lives under the Opera Garnier in Paris, France. He dubs himself the Phantom of the Opera and becomes obsessed with a chorus girl named Christine Daae. The Broadway musical was adapted into a movie in 2004.

Disney musicals have become very popular over the past few years. They include: The Lion King, Tarzan, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid. They have all been successful with the exception of Tarzan. They all feature lavish costumes and additional songs that have been added to the storyline. |

Hairspray is set in Baltimore in the 60’s. It tells the story of Tracy Turnbladt a “pleasantly plump” teenager who dreams of dancing on the Corny Collins Show. The Broadway show was adapted from the movie of the same name, starring Ricki Lake. A remake was released in 2007, starring an all-star cast, featuring John Travolta, Michelle Pfieffer, Queen Latifa, and Zac Efron. |

It tells the story of The Wizard of Oz, with a slightly modified storyline and completely new songs. The setting of Oz is changed from a cheery, Technicolor fantasyland, to a steamy, dark city similar to New York City.
