The National Hockey League was started in 1864 by a Canadian man named James George Alwyn Creighton. The players didn’t start to play with ice skates until 1865, one year later. The players backing the 19th century wore limited equipment on their bodies. |

The equipment they wore back in the 19th century were gurtles, sweaters, gloves, skates, shin guards, sticks, and shoulder pads under their sweaters. There use to be a lot of injuries back then since they wore limited equipment when they played. |

The goalies wore leg pads, gurtles, skates, glove and blocker, sticks, shoulder pads, and sweaters. The goalies didn’t even wear hockey masks to protect their faces. The goalies didn’t wear face protection until the middle of the 1900’s. |

It was later named the Stanley Cup in the 1930’s. the Stanley Cup is made of pure silver and is over two feet tall. Just for the record the Montreal Canadiens have won the most Stanley Cups Championship with eleven. |
