The Yorkshire terrier, or yorkie, has been bred since mid-18th century. There are not many similarities between the dogs back then and the dogs of today. Britain was an agrarian society, at that time, and yorkies developed in industrial centers, mills, and factories. Yorkies were not pampered houseguests. They were kept alive by eating rats and other vermin. In 1886 the British Kennel club recognized yorkies as an individual breed.

To groom your yorkie, daily brushing with natural bristle brush keeps a nice coat. Applying a little hair conditioner at the ends of the hair, prevent knotting. Application of oil, sparingly, on a dry coat, prevents breakage. Many owners decide to trim the long flowy coat, so that it is more manageable.

You should train your dog as soon as they enter the household, just like housebreaking. The training sessions should be short but frequent. For example 10 to 15 minutes a day. They don’t respond well to long, tiring sessions.

Soon after the puppies are born, they should begin nursing from their mother. By two months they should be fed puppy food. Puppies then should fed “growth” diets until they are 9-12 months. They should be fed 2-3 meals a day until 12 months old. Then 1-2 (preferably twice) when they are converted to adult food.

When selecting a dog ask yourself if you want a house pet, a dog for breeding, or a show dog. A male or female? Would you want a puppy or an adult? Ask many questions when buying. Lastly do some research about the dog to see what is better for you.
