In the 1960 the U.S. joined the Vietnam War. In about 1967 the U.S. had about 389000 troops in Vietnam. In 1968 North Vietnam shocked everyone when they launched an attack called the Tet Offensive. The U.S. and South Vietnam lost a great amount of soldiers. |

On November 22, 1963 president John F. Kennedy was assassinated. He was killed while riding in a parade in Dallas, Texas. Authorities accused Lee Harvey Oswald of killing JFK. He was to have a trial, but a man named Jack Ruby shot Oswald denying the U.S. the chance to get some answers. |

In the 1970s Richard Nixon beat Humphrey to become president. On April 30, 1970 Nixon announced an invasion of Cambodia, which caused protests around the U.S. which caused a lot of deaths. Later Nixon was impeached due to th Watergate incident. |

In the 1970s the U.S. suffered from unemployment and inflation, which left gas stations with no gas. In 1973 Arab countries that produced oil refused to sell it to the U.S. The refusal for oil caused gas prices to shoot up. |

In 1979 Iranian militants took over 60 Americans hostage. In 1980 the U.S. made a rescue attempt, but 3 helicopters failed to work and made the attempt a disaster. So, the president called off the mission. Iranians then released a couple hostages with health problems. After a 444 days in captivity, the hostages were released for 8 billion dollars of frozen Iranian assets. |
