More About Labrador Retrievers

Golden Retrievers began to be used by hunters in about the 1600’s. They were trained to deliver “bird to hand”. It was a way to attempt to improve the dog’s abilities to serve the owner. In the 1800’s, a service dogs were to provide was a hunter. They would fine the game, and then retrieve it. Wildfowling was the most popular game in that time. The retriever was a cross bred between a settler and a Newfoundland. By 1885, retrievers were considered kings of sporting dogs. The Golden Retriever was not an official breed, however, until 1959 in America, but 1960 in England.

Golden Retrievers range in size when they are grown. They also range in weight as well.  When a golden retriever male is full grown, they are about 23 to 24 inches. They also weigh about 65-75 pounds. For a female golden retriever, it is different, however.  A full-grown female is about 21 ½ to 22 1\2 inches long. They weigh between 55-65 pounds. Goldens are usually a brownish or yellowish in color. They usually have brown eyes. Golden Retrievers usually have wet brown/black noses. When they get older, usually their faces get a more whitish color. There is also no feeling in their tales. Their tales are usually the color of the hair on his body.  Goldens have long, fluffy hair.

A positive attitude is necessary for training. Corrections should definitely be made at the very first offense. A puppy usually must be shown what you require of him many times. All a puppy would like to do is please you in any way, so they will try their hardest. It will always take a few times for the puppy to understand it. A puppy will try it’s hardest as long as you have a positive attitude and you are patient with it.

Goldens were the most fearless, strongest, swimmers. Many dogs had ranges of color, however, it was thought that dogs with brown or yellowish fur were the most rapid of all swimmers. Golden retrievers even have a special oil on their skin to help it swim faster. The oil would help the water drip of a brown or yellow dog quicker than most fur.

The Golden Retriever is powerful, active, and not clumsy. Golden retrievers kindly display a personality that is eager, alert, and self-confident. They are also very hard-working in tough conditions. Golden Retrievers are all-around family dogs. They are great for young or small children. Goldens will welcome requested strangers and try their best to keep away any unwanted strangers.
