Cheerleading

Jumps are also a very important yet fun part of cheerleading.  There are many different types of jumps.  You do most of them by yourself but one jump can use a spot if you want one.  I personally love doing jumps.  You can do so many different things with them.  You can do jumps in ripples.  Jumps are usually done to an 8 count.

A toe-touch is one of the basic jumps.  It is also one of the most fun jumps. The legs are in an almost or a spilt in the air.  The higher and straighter the jumps are the better.  You should point your toes and your hands should look like you are trying to touch your toes.  Your chest and head should be up.

A pike is a little more complicated.  The legs are straight in front of you at a 90 degree angle or less.  Once again the straighter and higher the jump is the better.

A hurkey is another fun jump.  It has part of a pike in it.  One leg is straight in front of you and the other is bent behind you.  Another name for it is a hurdler.  You must swing your arms to get more power.

Around the World is a mix of a pike and a toe-touch.  You start in a front pike and then swing your legs into a toe-touch.  This is a very difficult jump to master.

A double nine is a less common jump.  One leg is straight in front of you and the other is bent to the knee and it is also in front of you.  Your arms follow the same pattern.  One arm is straight and the other is bent to the elbow.

You can do jump drills to make your jumps much better.  Do straight jumps, tuck jumps, frog jumps, and snap-ups to help you.  You can also keep repeating the jump over and over to make them better.
