The Fox Squirrel is the largest tree squirrel.  Their fur coat is typically reddish brown with a lighter belly.  There are 3 color phases: gray over yellow; reddish brown; black.  Color variations might include white markings.  The tail is bushy and usually has mixed colors except in the black phase.  The bottoms of the feet are black, and they usually molt 2 times annually, during the spring and fall.  Their bones are distinctively pink.  They weigh from 17 5/8-37 1/8 ounces (504-1062 gm).  There hind feet go up to 2-3 ¼ inches (51-82 mm).  Their body length is between 17 7/8-27 ½ inches (454-698 mm), and their tail length is 7 7/8-13 inches (200-330 mm).  They have 20 teeth.  Fox squirrels are not the only interesting squirrels.

                                               

 

        The body is reddish brown, or rust, tan, gray, yellowish, or reddish with paler to white belly.  It has a darker band that runs laterally on its sides between the back and belly.  They have white rings around their eyes and their tail hairs feature darker stripes on the outside edges with a line of white.  Also, there are small tufts on the ears.  They have yellowish tips and, are lined with a dark border.  The seasonal variations are: paler color on back in winter, dark line along sides between back and belly in summer, and they molt 2 times annually in spring and fall.  The body length is 10 5/8- 15 ¼ inches (270-385 mm), and the tail length is 3 5/8-6 ¼ inches (92-158 mm).  Their weight is 5-11 ounces (145-260 gm), and their hind feet length is 1 3/8-2 ¼ inches (35-57 mm).  They have 22 teeth.  Do you think red squirrels are cool?

 

   

 

         The Northern Flying Squirrel is exciting because it is not a normal squirrel.  It can fly.  They are brown with a lighter to white belly.  Their presents of patagium, a flap of used belly.  The patagium connects the front leg to the back leg, wrists to ankles.  The gliding membrane has dark or black outside the border, and in the southern range the coloration is darker.  Their tails are flattened, and their feet are light colored underneath.  The season variations are: lighter color and small eared tufts, souls of feet furred in winter, and one molt per year in fall.  The body length is 10 3/8-14 ½ inches (263-368 mm), the tail length is 4 ½ -7 1/8 inches (115-180 mm), the weight is 1 5/8-5 ounces (45-140 gm), the hind feet is 1 1/3-1 ¾ inches (34-45 mm).  The have 22 teeth.  Those are only a few of the interesting facts and characteristics.

 

 
 

           The Abert’s Squirrel is one of the largest tassel-eared squirrels.  The body length of this squirrel is 18 ¼-23 inches (463-584 mm), and the tail length 7 ¼-10 inches (195-255 mm).  They weigh 1 ½-2 pounds (681-908 gm), and 2 ½-3 1/8 inches (65-80 mm).  They also have 22 teeth.  They are large and their ears have very distinctive characteristics: large with vertical tufts of hair, ears are up to 1 ¾ inches (44 mm) with tufts up to 1 inch (25 mm).  The tufts grow longer with age.  With age they are dark brown or black sides darker, grizzled coloring is common.  Their 3 common color phases are: dark gray body with black lateral line and white belly, gray tail fringed with white; all black including tail; brown including tail.  These are just some of the great characteristics about the Abert’s Squirrel.

 

 

 

Nuts

The Western Gray Squirrels very intriguing.  The body length is up to 17 ½-23 ¼ inches (510-579 mm), and their weight is 12-34 ounces (340-964 gm). They have 22 teeth, their tail length is from 9 3/8-12 ¼ inches (265-290 mm), and hind feet length is 3-4 inches (74-80 mm).  The Western Gray Squirrels are gray with white hairs, belly lighter white to light gray.  Some red, yellow, or brown coloration are common in upper body or backs of ears.  The tail frequently banded with gray, white and black.  They have a distinct separation between coloring on the back and on the belly.  Their tail is large, bushy and broader than the Eastern Gray Squirrels.  Their feet may be darker colored, and they have white circles around their eyes.  The bottoms of their feet are gray and the Nigripes subspecies has distinctive black hind paws.  That is one interesting squirrel
