  Football was developed in schools and universities during 1860s. It is based on rugby and soccer. Walter Camp drafted the rules in 1876. There are 11 players on each side. To score, a player must run or receive the ball over the goal line (touchdown) or kick a field goal.
 

The game of hockey was officially started in the 1800s. There are two teams on each side with 11 players on each side. To score you have to hit t he puck with the stick into the other teams net/goal. Hockey is played on ice so hockey players wear skate on there feet.

 

In 1876 the first ice rink was opened. Today there are two types of skating Speed skating and figure skating. Both are Olympic sports. In speed skating they are judged on their speed around the rink. In figure skating they are judged on there performance. They also can work with a partner or by them selves.  

 

            The people in Scandinavia in northern Europe were the first people to ski. They skied for travel around not for a sport. Today skiing falls into two main categories. Nordic and Alpine Nordic includes cross country, ski jumping and biathlon. Alpine is a faster event like slalom, and downhill racing.    

 

The first bobsled races were held in Switzerland in 1880s. 2-4 people race in a sled down a high-speed, ice-walled track. The object of the bobsled race is to get the fastest time.    

 

 

In 1891 Dr. James Naismith invented basketball for his kids to play in door during winter. There are five players on each side. To score you shoot a round ball into a hoop or basket it is positioned about 10ft. above the ground. You have to dribble the ball to the other teams side you can also pass it to another team mate.
