There are three types of hits a batter can have. One of these is a ground ball. A ground ball is what happens when the batter swings down on the ball and puts it on the ground. When the ball is hit, the batter must run to first base to avoid getting thrown out.

Another kind of ball that a batter can hit is a fly ball. A fly ball is what happens when the batter swings up on the ball, making it go up high in the air. If a fielder catches a fly ball, the batter is automatically out.

The third kind of ball that a batter can hit is a line drive. A line drive is what happens when the batter swings right through the ball with enough force to make it travel parallel to the ground. If hit in a gap between two fielders, a line drive can become a double, or a two-base hit. But if a fielder catches a line drive, the batter is out, just as it is with a fly ball.

When batting, a hitter can either get a hit, walk, or strike out. To get a hit, a batter must hit the ball and make it to at least first base without getting out. To walk, which is a free pass to first base, the batter must not swing at four balls that are out of the strike zone. To strike out, a batter must miss a ball that is in the strike zone three times.

As the glove is to the fielder, a bat is to a batter. Bats are generally made of wood, but some bats, generally the ones used in little league to college play, are made of aluminum. Most baseball purists still only use and like bats of the wooden variety. Little league and college leagues use metal bats because they are more cost efficient and almost never break.
