When you are batting you use a bat to hit the ball. If you get three strikes you are out. A strike is when you swing and miss or the umpire calls a called strike in the strike zone. If you get four balls which are pitches not in the strike zone, and you don’t swing you get to go to first base. When you are hitting there are four types of hits to get a single, double, triple, and a homerun.

If you get on base you have to try to get to get to the next base until you cross home plate. Then it is a run. The only way to get to the next base is by stealing or one of your teammates gets a hit. When you are on base you can lead which is when you get off base and get closer to the next base.

The best type of hit you can get is a homerun. A home run is when you hit the ball over the outfield fence on a fly in fair territory. In center field the average fence for the MLB is about 400 ft. When you hit a homerun it is an automatic run. If anyone else was on base they also score automatically.

When you are hitting you get three outs. The ways to get out are by striking out, grounding out, getting picked off, getting caught stealing, popping out, and flying out. Flying and popping out is when you hit the ball in the air and the other team catches it before it hits the ground. Grounding out is when you hit the ball on the ground and the team fielding throws it to first before the runner gets there.

In a baseball game there are nine innings. One inning is when each team bats once. If a game is tied after nine innings they go into extra innings.
