Working dogs were companions to human hunters n their pursuit of all sorts of animals from mammoths to small birds. Dogs have working with humans for over one thousand years. They were used to draw sleds and also took part in the great bison hunts. In the 1800’s Australian farmers bred working dogs suited to the Australian climate and farming conditions.

Different types of dogs are used for different tasks.  The Australian kelpie rounds up sheep that has strayed from the flock. The Mastiff-type dogs in Switzerland were used to pull milk carts steadily along narrow paths. The Siberian husky is known for pulling sleds and hunting for seals and other arctic animals.

Herding dogs are used to herd livestock, such as sheep, cattle, reindeer, and other animals. Many herding breeds have a weather proof double coat to protect them from the elements when working in severe weather conditions. Herding dogs have great stamina reserves which allow them to work from dawn to dusk.

Dogs in the working group were developed to perform a wide variety of tasks such as herding, droving, pulling, hauling, herding, hunting, rescuing, and guarding. Many of these tasks require a large, strong dog. Working dogs are usually big, intelligent, and protective of their masters. Many of the dogs are used as:

·        Guard Dogs

·        Police Dogs

·        Sled Dogs

·        Rescue Dogs

·        Seeing eye Dogs
