Symbols

When it comes to skiing there are 6 types of symbols used to describe slopes. The symbol that represents the easiest type of slope is a green circle normally green circle slopes are wide with a slope anywhere from 6% to 25%. A blue square represents an intermediate slope usually ranging from 25% to 40% grade, these slopes are normally groomed and have the largest amount of traffic. a black diamond means the slope will be somewhat difficult with a slope upwards of 40%. Double black diamond are the most difficult sometimes have trees and narrow trails but are intended for only the most experienced skiers.

How It All Began

Alpine skiing or downhill skiing is when a skier slides down a hill attached to skis by specially made boots. Alpine skiing came from the idea of cross country skiing, up until a certain point their had not been anything to take skiers to the top of the hill multiple times, thus enabling downhill skiing. Originally skis were pointed at the front but today they are rounded.

NASTAR

NASTAR was developed by Ski Magazine in 1968. NASTAR stands for national standard racing today many ski resorts have permanent NASTAR slopes and equipment. The purpose of NASTAR was to create a fun, competitive, and easily accessible skiing organization that allowed racers of all ages and abilities to compare their race results with other racers all around the country. Every year the top skiers meet in a small town called Steamboat Springs in Colorado for the national NASTAR championships.

What to Wear

When going skiing it is important to dress appropriately because overdressing can lead to heat stoke and under dressing will leave you freezing. During the end of the season it will be a little bit warmer so you want to wear less than you normally would. Also it is always more comfortable to wear something waterproof and when it is snowing it is also a good idea to wear goggles and something to keep the snow out if you are going to fall a lot or if you are skiing in powder. It is also a good idea to tale hand or feet warmers with you just incase you under dress, they will keep you warm.
