Hawaii is the largest island of the Hawaiian island chain, from which the entire state takes its name. Hawaii was formed by volcanoes. However, all of them were inactive now. The island has about has about 92,000 people from a 1980 census. Hawaii is known to be the "Orchard Island". The large city of Hilo is what helps the island get its name. There over 35,00 people in the city. Hilo produces hundreds of thousands of flowers and plants each year. The Kona district of Hawaii is said to be "everyone's dream of a south pacific island." A lot of people say that Hawaii has the thickest, brightest foliage of all the islands. One of the most famous attractions of the big island is the black-sand beach near Kalapana, where surf foams always change. The old sacred city of Refuge in Honaunau has been restored as a National Historical Park Also, a monument has been made in memory of Captain Hood near where he fell at Kealakekua Bay. |

Surfing and sightseeing aren't the only thing to do is Hawaii, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea are good skiing spots in the winter as well. The word "Mauna" means mountain. "Loa" means long. Mauna Kea happens to be the highest point in Hawaii at 13,764 feet. To people who aren't familiar to it, the Hawaiian language may seem very strange. There are only 12 letters in the entire language including a, e, i, o u, h, k, l, m, n, p, and w. |
