Good Charlotte was formed in 1996 in Waldorf, Maryland. The band name Good Charlotte comes from a Children's book. The original members of Good Charlotte were Joel, Benji (Benji and Joel are twins.), Paul, and Bryan. Bryan was killed by jocks from his school. They ran over him with their car. They replaced Bryan with Aaron. Aaron then left to play with his brothers band Wakefield. They have had many drummers since.

People would make fun of Good Charlotte all of the time at the high school they went, La Plata high School. They made fun of them for the way they looked, the music they played, and the amount of money they had. Benji and Joel had it the worst out of everyone in Good Charlotte. When they were 16 years old, their father left them on Christmas Eve.

Their father was a severe alcoholic. After he left them, they began to lose a lot of money. Their Mother had to work many jobs to support their family. Benji and Joel also had to work many jobs. They even worked at a beauty parlor!  

Benji and Joel has the idea to form Good Charlotte after they went to a Beastie Boys concert. Also, at a Goldfinger concert Benji went up on stage and sang part of "Mable". They lead singer of Goldfinger, John Feldman, told Benji if liked it so much he should form his own band. Because of this, Benji and Joel then taught themselves how to play the guitar. They eventually formed Good Charlotte.
