Hearing Dogs

The job of a rescue dog is to help save lives. The most valuable service is the ability to sniff out missing. If there is a national disaster, the dogs help locate the people buried under the debris of the earthquakes, train wrecks, plane crashes, or collapsed building. The dogs also find people in avalanches and victims that have drowned in floods or boating accidents.

All of the rescuing dogs have very similar physical and mental characteristics.  They also have to be smart and obedient.  The dog’s acre willing to work and they love to please their handlers. The rescue dogs get along with children, adults, and mostly other dogs. The dogs must be bold, strong, and not at all frightened by all the commotions at the site of the disaster.

Most rescue dogs have to specialize in air scenting or trailing. The air scenting dogs sniffs the air to pick up the scents of both the living and the dead people.  Air scenting dogs are able to search for a person without sniffing a piece of clothing that belongs to that person. If there is a piece of clothing it would be a lot easier to find this person. In good weather conditions a dog can sniff up to about a quarter of a mile, but only on a good day.
In order to pick up a scent these dogs first sniff an article of clothing that belonged to the lost person. The clothing has the person’s skin cells on it.
