Archaeological evidence has shown that marked distinctions in the sizes of domestic dogs had already become apparent over 9,000 years ago. This trend seems to have gathered momentum, with the characteristic build of many of today’s breeds being established by Roman times. By this stage in their history, dogs were being kept large for the same purposes they are today: hunting, working with farm animals, guarding property, and acting as companions. |
