Samos is filled with many interesting sites, fascinating beaches, and cultural significance. Samos is an amazing island. It attracts many tourists from around the world.

 

          One site on Samos is the Eupalinus Tunnel. The tunnel has a total length of 1,350 meters. Built in the sixth century B.C., it was originally used to carry water to the island’s capital. The tunnel is the second known tunnel in history which was excavated from both ends, and the first with a methodical approach in doing so. Today it is a popular attraction to many tourists. Another site is the monastery of Our Lady “Spiliani”. It is a church located at the back of a cave.

 

There are many magnificent sand and rock beaches on Samos. A few are Potokaki Beach, Psili Ammos, Tsamadou Beach, Plaka Beach, Icabos Beach, and Kokkari Beach. Some of the beaches have very fine smooth sand. Also, some of them have rocks and pebbles. Overall, all of Samos’s beaches are all very nice.

 

Samos is home to many famous people from the ancient times. One of the most famous is Pythagoras. He was a very famous mathematician. Another is the philosopher Epicurus who is from Samos. The astronomer Aristarchus of Samos is credited with the first recorded heliocentric model of the solar system. The historian Herodotus, known by his Histories, resided in Samos for a while.  Another Samian was the great sculptor and inventor Theodorus, who are said to have invented with Rhoecus the art of casting statues in bronze. Another famous Samian sculptor, also called Pythagoras, migrated to Rhegium.
