Britain controlled Egypt during World War Two. Many battles occurred in Egypt, since Germany wanted possession of it. In this picture, British troops counterattack during German fire. The bayonets on the guns were for close-range combat.

This is the Maginot Line on the German and French border. The French depended on its defensive strength throughout the war. Under those domes, there are chambers holding weapons and soldiers. The artilleries on the front are anti-tank guns to stop incoming German soldiers and tanks. However, Adolf Hitler got around the Maginot Line. He went north to its weakest point in the dense Ardennes Forest. When he came, the French could not stop him.

In this picture, a British soldier stands under a net that is concealing an airplane. The British were forced to retreat at the French coastal town of Dunkirk during World War Two. They and the French packed all their weapons and soldiers on boats to retreat from Nazi Germany. They even had to pack planes on large boats and carriers to evacuate them. This soldier looks back to the town across the water.

Allied bombers often had to get very close to targets to hit them accurately. In this picture, an Allied bomber drops bombs over an oil refinery in German territory. Bombings often left nothing but ruin in their wake. In parts of Munich, Germany, this is evident. Buildings there are reduced to stone walls. German bombings also reduced much of London, England to ruin.

In this picture, soldiers take fire at a partisan who tried to fight against Germany. This Frenchman was resisting after the capture of the Czech city that he lived in. Hitler and Germany also killed many innocent people. Hitler once destroyed a whole city because one of his high-ranking officials was killed in battle there. In the well-known Holocaust, Hitler killed millions of Jews.

Russian forces were some of the strongest in World War Two. As huge amounts of the Russian Red Army advanced into Germany, German defense stiffened. Josef Stalin, the Russian leader, killed more innocent citizens than Hitler himself. Hitler killed 8 million in the well-known Holocaust, but Stalin killed almost 40 million.
