Swimming

During swim meets there are a ton of events to choose from. Some of them depend on your age though. The fall, winter, and spring sessions are measured in yards and in the summer season the pools are measured in meters and are usually outside.

A swimmer can usually swim up to four events per day not including relays. If the meets are to crowded an event must be scratched. Most meets last from two to three days total.

The first stroke, butterfly is a very challenging stroke. It requires a lot of strength. Butterfly has only three events. The 50 yard/meter, 100 yard/meter, and the 200 yard/meter.

The next stroke is backstroke. There are only three possible races. The 50 yard/meter, 100 yard/meter, and the 200 yard/meter. In back you need a perfect start, fast arms and strokes, amazing flip turns, and a hard finish.

Third, breaststroke. It requires a lot of work to get just right, but once you have it, it’s a blast. The different events are the 50 yard/meter, 100 yard/meter, and the 200 yard/meter.

Freestyle, one of the most popular strokes has six possible races. The 50 yard/meter, 100 yard/meter, 200 yard/meter, 500 yard/meter, 1000 yard/800 meter, and the 1650 yard/1500 meter.

Last, the individual medley or I.M. The different events are 100 yard/meter, 200 yard/meter, and the 400 yard/meter. In an I.M. all the strokes are swum and all have the same amount of yards/meters.

Relays are so much fun! In a relay you have four people. Each person gets a turn to swim. The five main relays are 200 freestyle, 200 medley, 400 freestyle, and the 400 medley.
