William Laird Cowher was born on May 8, 1957 in Crafton, Pennsylvania. He went to North Carolina State University. He graduated from North Carolina Sate University in 1979. He entered the NFL draft bit was not drafted although he was picked up as a free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1979. One year later he went to the Cleveland Browns. Two years later he got picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles again. |

| His coaching career started in 1985 with the Cleveland Browns as the Special Teams Coordinator. Two years later the Cleveland Browns moved him up as a secondary coach. Two years later he hired by the Kansas Chiefs as their defensive coordinator. |

In 1992, at he age of 35, Bill Cowher was named as Head Coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He followed Chuck Noll. His career record for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the regular season was 149 wins, 90 losses, and 1 tie. His post-season record was 12 wins and 9 losses. He coached the team to two Super Bowl appearances. He lost the 1995 Super Bowl but won the 2005 Super Bowl 40. |

His coaching awards included being named the AP NFL Coach of the Year in 1992. In 1992 he was also named the NFL Coach of the Year in the Sporting News. In 2004 he was the Sporting News Coach of the Year. He also had one Super Bowl win under his belt.

In 2007, Bill Cowher announced his retirement from the post of Head Coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. This ended his 15-year coaching career with this organization.
