The actual game of soccer was developed in England. Graduates of English private schools formed the football association and produced the first common set of rules. Merchants, Administrators, and engineers from Britain took the game overseas. British teams toured the world, introducing soccer to other countries by playing exhibition matches. The first international match was held in November of 1872, Scotland verse England, the score was 0-0.

Captain David Beckham has the skill of crossing the ball from the right wing, curling the ball around the full-back and away from the goalie. This skill is valuable for a team because crossing from the wings result in more goals than any other attack.

England’s team has been around for a long time. So some of their stars can date back to a long time like Stan Mortensen (above), Stanley Matthew, Tom Finney, Billy Wright, Roy Bentley, Jimmy Mullen, and Wilf Mannion who were apart of the first team England entered into the world cup competition. Also Niel Franklin was a great player but did not play on the same team. Other, newer star players for England are Michael Owen, Bobby Moore, Gordon Banks, Alan Ball, Roger Hunt, and Jimmy Greaves. Geoff Hurst and David Beckham are two other fantastic players. David Beckham is currently the captain of the English team.

Though soccer originated in England, England does not have the best World Cup record in the world. England has only won one World Cup in 1996. Well at least they’ve won one.
