The Beginning of New York City

New York was first inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The European discovery was made by an Italian whose name was Giovanni de Verrazzano. An English man named Henry Hudson discovered the Manhattan part of New York on September 11th, 1609. During the New York campaign which was a series of engagements in the Revolutionary War between the British which was lead by General Sir William Howe and the Americans who were lead by General George Washington. The cause of that was that the area was split into loyalties. The first loyalty that was spilt is now called Staten Island. Manhattan was under British rule until the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783. In 1825 is when the Erie Canal opened, which allowed New York City to overtake Boston and Philadelphia in economic importance. In 1904, when new series of transportation links opened which also allowed the city to grow more rapidly. In the late 1920’s a lot of skyscrapers were being built and those skyscrapers are the ones that now define the famous New York City skyline. After, New York beat London as the most populated city in the world in 1925. That title of being the most populated city in the world was taken from London after ten years of being number one. Also, during the post-war, a lot of people were moving to the suburbs because of all the city’s problems and the city started to go down hill. A lot of the city’s problems were solved, such as their bad crime rate and poverty stricken areas, but New York City was renewed into the city we love and care about today.
