Movie History

                                                                                               Home                 Types of Movies

Movies, as I said before, started out with the ancient Greeks. Though then they were just moving shadows. Later, in the 1800's, centuries later, inventors and entertainers came together from all over. They then made the first moving motion picture. This is now been called the birth of movies.

Boulevard des Capucines was where the first movie was shown. Though it only sold 35 tickets, it introduced Cinematorage, (see Front page for picture), is the first camera- projector. The first movie was ten short films.

Since then, we have had many new changes to the technology of movies. One of them was the Phantasmorgia, made in 1798. It was made by a man named Etienne Robert. This was called the forerunner of horror films. He used a moving lantern and smoke to terrify the people.

Another invention was the Perstiance of Vision. Though it was somewhat invented by the Egyptians, they say it was invented by a French physicist named Chevalier de Arcyin in 1765. What it is is a series, or sequence of counting action pictures. Another one was the Thaumatrope. It means spinning wonder. It was invented by Dr. John Paris in 1826. It's a disk that you put a picture on each side. Like maybe a woman, and on the other side an umbrella. You put two holes on the sides, then string, you spin it, and then you have a Thaumatrope.

Zoetrope was another invention to the movie history. It was invented by William Horner, and was originally was going to be called the Daedalum. It was a strip of pictures made into a circle, and spin. That is the Zoetrope.

Scotsman Dickson was an assistant to Thomas Edison, and invented the movie camera in 1891. It was called the Kinetograph. He later, to satisfy the demand of the people, made a studio called the Black Maria. This made some of the first movies ever.

Louis Lumiere is one of the first still photographers, who shot the first action of a movie through a special angle. One of his biggest hits was the L'Arroseur Arrose, about a boy getting tricked into sprinkling himself with a hose. He then that year, started filming things around the world .They were mostly of the famous landmarks. By 1903, he had had over 2,000 films.

George Melies was a magician who thought that his magic acts could be useful to films. Though he liked Louis's films, he thought that they lacked entertainment. So, he started, at first to make doctumenties. Then, later off, he started to make, and preferred to make short dramas. He later started to make horror and science fiction films, and also made a lot of special effects. He had made up to 1,000 short films from the time of 1896 to 1914. Though today, only 140 still exist.

That was a short history of films. Though I don't have enough room to tell you the whole history of movies, you can find some more information for yourself. You can go to your local library. Or, you can look up information on the internet. So that some history of movies.
