Horseback Riding

The Western style of riding is more relaxed than the English style. Also, the saddles look different. The Western saddle has a saddle horn that cowboys used to put their lassos on while they were riding.
Rodeos consist of many fun events, like bronco riding. During this event, the rider will be put on a horse that is trained to buck until the rider falls off, or until the time is up. The put the horse into a chute, so they can get a saddle on him, and let the rider get on. Once the rider gets on, the chute is opened up, and the horse begins to buck. The rider has to keep one arm in the air. If both hands touch the horse ate the same time, then the rider is disqualified. This event does not usually last long. The rider will either be thrown by the horse, or the rider will jump down. This event is timed, and very dangerous. If the rider gets bucked off, then they have a chance of being trampled. This event is very dangerous, but also very exciting to watch.
Western pleasure is a showing class, and the horse and rider are told to perform gait changes, which mean that they change from the walk to trot, trot to canter, and so on. They are also told to perform many other stunts.  Horses are also shown in a group in the arena, performing changes of direction as requested by the judge. Horses are judged for their appearance, style and movement.
Another sport is barrel racing, horse and rider enter the arena, while going as fast as they can, and they turn around a series of three barrels, turning tightly around each barrel without going too wide, which will cause you to lose precious seconds, or cutting in too close and possibly knocking a barrel over, and losing points. The faster you are, the higher you will finish. This is a speed sport and the fastest across the finish line wins.
In roping events, the rider follows a steer, which is a castrated male cattle, out of the chute, aims and throws the lasso, which is a rope used for roping cattle, while riding at very fast speeds. Then he secures the lasso around the saddle horn on the saddle.  Your horse needs to be trained to stop so the steer stands still. The rider quickly dismounts, grounds the steer and quickly ropes its legs. The first riders to get his steer tied and raise his arms to signal that he is done the fastest wins.

Cutting is another event in western. In cutting events, the horse must be well trained. The horse and rider enter a group of cattle and single one out. The pair then moves the steer away from the others. If the steer gets back to the herd, then the horse is done. The horse must be well trained to know how to anticipate where the steer will go. The horse must face the steer the whole time. They need to keep the steer away from the herd for a certain amount of time. Both the horse and rider will need to be prepared for this event.
There are also reining classes, which is when the horse and rider perform a certain pattern of movements. This event has been called "Western dressage." This involves making circles, spins, slides and turns. The pair are judged on the accuracy of the movements, the aids the rider gives the horse, and the horse's obedience. This event takes a lot of preparation.
