Softball

Pitching is a very important part of softball. In fast pitch softball you must make a circle with your arm and the ball. Lisa Fernandez, a pitcher for the 1996 Olympic USA softball team, is pitching fast pitch in the picture to the left. In slow pitch softball you have to throw the ball underhand to the catcher.

Catching is also a very important part of softball. In both softballs the catcher is in charge of catching the ball from the pitcher and throwing it back to her or him. In fast pitch the catcher is also in charge of throwing the ball down to the bases if someone is stealing. The catcher’s position is shown at the right.

The first baseman is also in a key position. The first baseman must cover first base. They must stand with one foot on the corner of the base and one foot off of it as shown to the left.

The second baseman also plays key position. The main thing the second baseman must do is to cover second base. The second baseman also can cover first base if the first baseman leaves the base.
Third base is a vital position. The third baseman must cover third base. Also, if there is a bunt the third baseman, first baseman, pitcher, and catcher are supposed to charge the bunt.

The short-stop is an important player. They must cover second or third base. The short-stop must cover second base, when there is a runner on first, or third base, when there is a runner on second, for the steal after every pitch in fast pitch softball.

All the infield positions play in the infield, dirt part, of the field.
