Substitutes Substitutes or subs are the players that go in when a player on the court needs a break or gets hurt. Subs aren’t the best players on the team and they aren’t the starters that do “Jump Ball”. Jump ball is in the very beginning of the game to decide who gets the ball. The players stand around the tallest player on both team, while the referee tosses the ball up in the air between the tallest players. These two player have to throw the ball to a teammate, this is easier than flipping a coin.
