Speak the command "Sit" as you gently pull up on the leash and push your dog's rump down with your left hand.

Always praise your dog when he sits and the exercise is complete. Eventually, your dog will sit on command without being pushed into position or having to use bait.  Practice this command often.  Having a dog that will sit when commanded will be very helpful in many ways!

First, put your dog on a six-foot leash and command "Dog's Name, sit".

Option 1:  Next, command "down" holding your right hand with the palm open, slightly above the dog's head.  If necessary, bend over and pull down on the chain until your dog is down.

Option 2: Kneel next to your seated dog, lift the dog's right paw in your right hand and push down on his left shoulder with your left hand.  Command "down" at the same time.

Option 3:  For large dogs or dogs that do not respect the down command, kneel and hold the dog's muzzle with your left hand, turning the dog's head gently to the left.  With your right hand placed directly behind the dog's shoulder blades, push your dog down while commanding "down."

Practice, practice, practice until your dog will go down on command while you are standing at his side and stay in position for at least three minutes.  Don't forget to praise your dog when the exercise is finished!

First, put your dog on a six-foot leash and sit your dog at your left side. Speak command "Stay" and bring your right hand in front of the dog's face. Step in front of your dog leading with your right foot.  If your dog moves, quickly put your dog back in a sit position, tell the dog to "Stay", and move away from your dog, again. After several practices, move farther and farther away until you are at the end of your leash. Practice, practice, practice until your dog will sit and stay for at least one minute.  Then, try going for three minutes. Don't forget to praise your dog when the exercise is finished!

First, sit your dog.  Next, tell your dog to "stay. "Walk away from your dog, leading with your right foot. At the end of the leash, turn and command "Dog's name, come." As he comes, take a couple of quick steps backward and roll up the leash until the dog is in front of you. If your dog is slow at coming or does not respond on the first call, try using a treat.  Show the dog the treat while you call and give him the treat when he comes.

Don't forget to praise your dog when the exercise is finished!
