Serving

The whole game starts with a serve.  The ball has to go over the net, or the other gets a point.  There are two ways to serve, underhand and overhand.  Underhand doesn’t require all the strength as overhand.  So if you are not that strong yet, start out doing underhand.  Overhand is a little more difficult and requires you to hit the ball at the right time and be somewhat strong.

Passing

Passing is used the most when you play.  You lock your hand and thumb together, and you have to keep your arms extended to have a nice platform.  You also have to bend your knees so you can get power out of it.   This is called the forearm pass.

Setting

For setting, you always have a setter on your team.  They always get second hit and the first hit has to make it to them.  The setter must get to the spot, but if the ball is below the waist, you have to use the forearm pass.  They must set the ball so the other person can spike the ball.

Spiking

In spiking, you mostly have to have a tall person spike so they can get the ball over the net.  You can have a small person if they can jump high enough, though.  There is a certain way to go to the ball, and that is called the approach.  At the end of the approach, you have to have both feet together, and then jump.  At the top of the jump, you have to strike the ball, hitting it with and open hand.

Blocking

Blocking is a defensive move.  It is trying to prevent a hitter from hitting the ball to your side of the net.  You have to jump straight up and spread your fingers.  If you do a correct block, the ball will fall back on the other side of the court, giving your team a point.

Jump Serve

A jump serve is another kind of serve.  Begin the serve with the ball in both hands.  Throw the ball up, and make sure it is about a foot in front of you.  Jump up, hit it like a spike, and jump forward.
