Another popular
breed is the Bloodhound. They are very clumsy but will track anything
you give them. They are able to track scents partially because of their
long ears. Their ears help because they sweep the ground in front of
them and help bring any scent closer to the dog’s nose. Their name comes
from the ability to track a scent from blood for days. They are part of
the hound group and they, of course, hunt by scent. Bloodhounds are
usually around 120lbs.

Collies come in many
varieties. The most popular are the Rough-Coated Collie, Smooth-Coated
Collie, Bearded Collie, and the Border Collie. They come in many
different colors. All collies are part of the Herding group. Most
collies originated in Scotland. However, no one is really sure where the
Rough Coated Collie originated from. In Scotland, they were and still
are used for guarding and herding potentially dangerous livestock.

Golden Retrievers
are the second most popular dog ever. Goldens are used today as seeing
eye and hearing dogs. The Golden Retriever came about in England during
the late 19th century. They are part of the Sporting group.
These dogs are especially good with people and young children. So, as
you can guess, Goldens are not good guard dogs.

The largest of all
terriers is the Airedale. They are great guard dogs and are known for
the saddle-like marking on their backs. Like all terriers, they need
firm handling and lots of training. They are now used as police dogs in
Germany and England.

The Irish Wolfhound
is the tallest of all dogs. I t was used in Ireland to stop the growing
wolf problem there. They can weigh as much as 120lbs and can be as tall
as 34in tall from there paws to the tallest part of their head. They are
great with children and make excellent guard dogs. They can move
surprisingly fast for a large dog.
