The Many Different Kinds

Slashers- Slasher movies are mainly about maniacs who live only for bloodshed and usually choose teenagers for their victims.  They had first appeared in so-called “yellow horror” movies, which were incredibly gory movies made by Italian directors.  Now there are mass murderers like Leatherface and Freddy Krueger

Horror movies with Heart- All horror movies aren’t just about mindless killing and bloodshed, some movies like “Edward Scissorhands” or “The Phantom of the Opera” can be real tear jerkers but also very gothic.  Tim Burton gave horror a heart in his modern day Gothic Fantasies “Corpse Bride” and “The Nightmare before Christmas.

Spine Tinglers- Spine Tinglers include killing but in a different kind of way, not a way that makes you jump out of your seat, but more of a way that sends a chill down your spine.  In the movie “The Nightmare before Christmas” there is really no killing but horror type scenery.  In “Gremlins” the creatures were killed but not brutally.

Haunted Houses- Haunted House movies are mainly about houses that are inhabited by ghosts.  In the “Grudge” a house in Japan is haunted by 2 ghosts (a young boy who can turn into a cat, and an angry wife who cheated on her husband).  In the 2006 movie “Monster House” the Haunted House franchise went animated.

Creatures- Space Creatures, Man-made Creatures, Sea Creatures, they are all under one category…Creatures.  In “Frankenstein”, Dr. Frankenstein creates the brutal but kind-hearted Frankenstein out of body parts.  In “Doom” The Rock and others kill creatures in outer space.

Werewolves- The werewolves are out! In 1933 “The Ghoul” was released which was the 1st werewolf movie.  Wolf movies are mainly about people who turn into wolves by night when they see a full moon.

Vampires- In 1922 the original vampire movie “Nosferatu” was shown in theaters based off of Bram Stroker’s legend.  Vampire movies are about people who turn into wolves or bats, are against crosses, garlic, and sunlight, but most importantly need blood, so they bite other’s necks so they can suck it out and turn them into vampires.

Devil- Some movies go so far as to religion, those movies are devil worship movies.  In all the “Omen” movies and its remake, Damian, the son of the devil walks the earth causing destruction.  In “The Omen: The Final Conflict”, Damian is an adult but also the ambassador of England.  In the original “Wicker Man” (I haven’t seen the remake yet) a man is burned alive in a giant statue by devil worshiping pagans.

Witchcraft- Witchcraft movies are about spells, magic and sometimes actual witches.  In the “Skeleton Key” a girl treats an ill man but discovers the secret of Hoodoo (a way of Voodoo) and it leads to a big twist in the end.

Paranormal- Paranormal movies are about strange occurrences and people controlled by others.  In the “Exorcist” a young girl is possessed by the devil.

Monsters- Monster movies are about people that turn into horrible monsters or giant creatures.  In “The Fly” a scientist turn’s into a fly.  In “King Kong” people go to a island only to find a giant ape that falls in love with one of the crew members.

Ghosts- Ghost movies are about people who are killed and turn into ghosts. In “Ghostbusters” half way through the movie the Titanic rises from the waters and drops off ghosts at its original desired location.

Zombies/Grave risers- At first Zombie movies were all about the mummy rising from his tomb.  In 1968 the first zombie “The Night of the Living Dead” came out in theaters.  In “Shaun of the Dead” Comedy and Horror was mixed to make a great movie.  It would seem that the Horror Film is anything but dead and buried.
