North America

Americans have their own sense of dance style, such as drums preformed by Canadian Inuit. The settlers brought folk dances from Europe. In the 20th century, Americans brought popular dances like Jazz & Rock n’ Roll & disco. Another style of dance in America is street style. In 1969 artist Africk Bambaataa encourages teens in poor areas like New York City to start break dancing crews. They had portable stereos or boom box, playing hip hop and dancing

 

 

Australia & Oceania

Australian Aborigines & New Zealand Maoris have kept traditional dances alive. So have the peoples from other south sea islands, such as Hawaii & Tahiti. Hula dancing is popular in Hawaii. Hula Kahiko or ancient hula uses chanting and dance to retell Hawaii’s history. This dance has its roots in ancient rituals performed by men to thank the Gods. Today, hula auwana, or the modern hula is also performed to simply express happiness.

 

 

 

South & Central America

The oldest dances in South & Central America are from native Indians. But there is also a rich heritage from Europe, especially in Spain, like ballroom dances , like the tango, African influences came through the black slaves who had seen taken to south America to work. The influences from them gave rise to dances such as the Samba. Another type of dance is the Conchero dancer. Mexican concheros are Native Indians who perform at fiestas. The dancers wear tall, plumed headdresses, showing the influence is their mixtec & Aztec heritage. The dancers are accompanied by rhythmic, hypnotic drumming

 

 

Europe

Dances of Europe include the waltz ,polka, & flamenco. Most of these dances are for couples, Men & woman. Europe is also the birthplace of ballet, witch originated in the 17th century. Danish dancing is also famous in Europe. Every year in Denmark, there are two big festivals of folk music & dance. The skagen is in June & the other Tonder is  in august.

 

 

Africa

Most of African dances are often performed for and event or function  like preparing for war, to give thanks, or to mark the stages in people's lives. In western Africa, dancers frequently wear sculpted masks. Incwald is a five day harvest held in Swaziland, southern Africa. On the third day of the harvest the King performs a sacred dance to please his swozi ancestors, then eats the first pumpkin of the rind. His people sing and dance before feasting on the first fruits of the year.

 
 

Asia

Asia is the world’s largest continent. It is also home to a wide variety of dance traditions, such as the belly dance of the middle eat. The classical dances of India & the elaborate, theatrical court dances of China, Japan, & Korea. Thai dance is important in Thailand it’s a traditional temple dance. The dancers wear intricate gilaed costumes. Their dance is a form of prayer and mediation. Every movement is elegant, precise and controlled.
